Above the Law - Covering the Court: Thoughts from Dahlia Lithwick

No mention of Nina Totenberg. They're probably bitter rivals. Quite a few interesting observations here, though.

Quoted: One area where [journalists] can add value is by providing analysis and context, given the knowledge SCOTUS correspondents acquire about the Court as an institution and the personalities who fill the bench. Of course, more "news analysis" raises the classic tension between reporting and opinion in coverage of the Court.

THE BOY OF SUMMER: GQ Features

After a little research, my suspicions were confirmed: this story is a hoax. I probably wouldn't have followed up if not for the part about Jake rebuffing the Yankees' recruiting efforts. I did notice the "Irving Clifford" mention, but missed its significance.

Quoted: I first heard about Jake Floyd last summer. I was doing research on minor league franchises when someone mentioned that a small-town team in Arizona had a 12-year-old as its general manager. At first I’d assumed it was the latest in a long tradition of minor league publicity stunts, like the club in New Hampshire that let the skier Bode Miller play left field, or those teams in Kansas City that played a couple of innings of their game on a Microsoft Xbox.

Questions that kill candidates' careers - Politico.com

Cool article - I miss Bernie Shaw. For more on his impressive career and the rise of cable news check out "Live from Baghdad," a great HBO production.

Quoted: "I couldn't not do that. I'm from the Chicago school of journalism. I believe in asking tough questions. This whole process is too easy on politicians. They fly up and down the country asking for votes and they ought to be forced to stand up and say what they really feel. Otherwise the voters are being jilted."

    CBC.ca - Arts - Media - Infinite jest

Quoted: What do The Daily Show, The Onion, McSweeney’s and, indeed, most entertainment weeklies have in common? They all owe a debt to Spy, the New York magazine co-founded in the mid-’80s by Graydon Carter and Kurt Andersen.

Ryan Spencer Reed | Sudan: The Cost Of Silence | Group M35 Member Photographer

Redot of one of my first dots. These were on display at MSU Law during most of this semester, and I just realized - Mom pointed it out, actually - that the photographer is an '02 Calvin grad. There are some amazing photos in here. The installation made a big impression at the law school. (A cold-hearted audience by all accounts)
