    Conspicuous Consumption (Metro Times Detroit)

Comprehensive guide to the best of Detroit food. Going to have to start a checklist (hopefully we can begin the tour in New Center - best pre-theater splurge and best collard greens).

Quoted: All things culinary, from fine dining to superb take-out.

    kirtsy

    Social networking site for ladies.

Quoted: KiRTSY is a place to find things. News. Ideas. Information. Products. Coolness. And more and more and more. It's like that friend who always finds the best stuff... only better. Because it finds the stuff online. And let's face it, there are billions of online options...and finding something you're interested in is sometimes tricky. A spot that you can stop in to see what excellent things others have found.

Model D - Bucks Start Here: Russell Industrial Center

    Cheap commercial space.

Quoted: Eric Novack, the RIC's leasing agent, considers it a melting pot for artists and small businesses. The former Murray Body Company where thousands of factory workers built bodies for the Dodge Brothers now relies on entrepreneurs for its bread and butter.

Strict new border policies are turning Canada into a foreign country | Salon News

This is an issue near and dear to my heart, and there are lots of good points in this article. There are also lots of unsupported conclusions though, and the author ignores the fact that our trade relationship is, overall, wildly successful for both parties.

Perhaps the reason Windsor isn't doing well compared to 1999 is that the Loonie is no longer a joke and Detroit built casinos of its own. In which smoking is allowed. And our own state, particularly the SE region, is falling apart and so we have less to spend and we consciously choose to spend it here.

There are perfectly good reasons for enhanced security that can and will help both nations in the long run.

Quoted: Strict new border policies are turning Canada into a foreign country. Is this any way to treat our neighbors?

Hard lemonade, hard price | Freep.com

Everything about this story is absolutely absurd...

Quoted: But it would be two days before the state of Michigan allowed Ratte's wife, U-M architecture professor Claire Zimmerman, to take their son home, and nearly a week before Ratte was permitted to move back into his own house.

    Driving Detroit - A Freep.com special series

This is amazing. Get lost in Detroit without any fears at all.

Quoted: See the virtual map that displays photo galleries, videos and panoramas on certain points of the Google map. The assignment was extreme, even a little preposterous: a 4-month, 2,700-mile odyssey through Detroit's 2,100 or so streets. From downtown to 8 Mile -- and all points in between -- we took a street-level survey of all 138 square miles to bring you a unique view of the Motor City.

The HOUSE OF DAVID BASEBALL TEAM RESEARCH PROJECT

For those interested in wildly popular early-20th-c. barnstorming religious baseball teams, here's a dot for you.

I was trying to work them into my faves league fantasy baseball team name, but Derek wisely limited names to 20 characters.

Quoted: By 1920, the team was "barnstorming" around the country, earning money for the colony, and using the team as a way to preach to potential members.

Speakers at Academy Said to Make False Claims - New York Times

Calvin Prof. Doug Howard cited in an article about supposed Muslim-terrorists-turned-Christians out on the public speaking tour. They spoke at the AFA yesterday and at Calvin in November.

Quoted: Mr. Howard said his doubts about their authenticity grew after stories like the Golan Heights saga as well as something on Mr. Saleem’s Web site along the lines that he was descended from the grand wazir of Islam. “The grand wazir of Islam is a nonsensical term,” Mr. Howard said.

I just heard Ford sales were down 28% this June! The rest of the automakers announce later today.

This could be the first month that Toyota outsells GM in the U.S. Last month, the Ford F-150 lost its top spot (to the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla) after many years at the top.

Detroit needs to figure things out fast. To make things worse, not only is Detroit's slice of the pie shrinking, the pie is shrinking, too.

Quoted: So, now what? Now, people want fuel efficiency, fuel efficiency and fuel efficiency. But not everyone wants a compact car. Plus, Honda and Toyota have the compact car business cornered anyway. Sure, Detroit needs better small cars. But to thrive General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC must go different ways than their Japanese rivals – and fast.
