detroitblog » Another one bites the dust

Quoted: Another downtown skyscraper from Detroit’s golden years is being torn down, the victim of a city unwilling to maintain it and developers unwilling to invest in it.

State to mom: Stop baby-sitting neighbors' kids, or else - The Macomb Daily News

Hopefully, Human Services just earned themselves a huge cut in the soon-to-be-announced budget. And I say this as someone who usually loves big, regulatory government.

Quoted: IRVING TOWNSHIP (AP) — A southwest Michigan woman has been told that she's in danger of being arrested if she continues to watch her neighbors' children each morning before they get on the school bus.

Quoted: State law says no one may care for unrelated children in their home for more than four weeks a year unless they're licensed.

As students flee, Detroit football teams lose ground | detnews.com | The Detroit News

I know the city has bigger problems than HS sports. I guess this article illustrates those too, though.

Quoted: Two years ago, the Detroit Public School League basked in the glory of Detroit King's state football championship. Much has changed since then -- for the worse.

Pretty Soon They’re Going To Be The Pink Wings, DPS Has A Fancy Summer School, And Why American Idol Is Michigan’s Last, Best Hope : DETOUR

This publication was defunct for several months. Now they're back, boasting the best Michigan daily news roundup anywhere. And if you don't like the writing, or are loyal to the schools they make fun of, there's a nice photo to lead things off today.

Quoted: Turns out, Davenport has dorms and a hockey team called the Panthers and everything! Go figure. One of their dorms was evacuated yesterday because of some weird smell. This whole thing was probably set up by the Davenport Board of Trustees to promote that they have dorms.

Lawmakers explore plan for state high-speed rail line | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press

Um, Lansing? I know beggars can't be choosers and all, but that's basically a bridge to nowhere (even if you're getting there fast). They ought to at least be mentioning plans to build this to the end of metro Chicago transit via I-196, even if it isn't part of "stage 1" plans.

If you're going to reveal pie in the sky plans, you might as well aim high.

Quoted: LANSING – Are we ready for a high-speed, hydrogen-powered, magnetically-driven rail line from Detroit to Lansing? A House task force hopes to find out in a series of hearings around the state on an ambitious plan by private investors to build a first-of-its-kind rail line along state freeways.

Model D - Hey Mitch: Detroit Primed to Play More Than Defense

More navel gazing from Detroit, but this one is pretty good.

Quoted: And yet the story from the local guy that runs in a national publication reinforces all of Detroit's old stereotypes by opening in a homeless shelter, then offering an inventory of the negative and ignoring what I see every day in Detroit. I can't help but feeling like one of those creatures in Horton Hears a Who! shouting: "We are here! We are here! We are here!" We're not stuck or for that matter necessarily tough. We just like going to neighborhood bars like The Bronx, a rogue art show or two, and running into 50 percent of our friends in one trip to Avalon International Breads. We like living surrounded by the Great Lakes and across the river from Canada. We like being surrounded by some of the most creative people, musicians and artists anywhere

Auto Makers to Get $17.4 Billion - WSJ.com

Wow, that's good news. Didn't expect it after the managed bankruptcy talk yesterday.

Quoted: "In the midst of a financial crisis...allowing the U.S. auto industry to collapse is not a responsible course of action," Mr. Bush said.

Photo Gallery: Metro Detroit's best burgers

Yum. We've got a lot of burgers to try. This is the only one I've had.

Quoted: The one-third-pound ground round burger is a signature of this clubby, upscale bar in the Pointes. They come thick and very juicy, cooked just as you ordered and great plain or loaded up with ingredients. They're "the best of the best," reader Christina Olofsson wrote from Troy.
