Quoted: Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wesley Sneijder scored in the first half, and standout defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst added the third goal on a counterattack in the 79th minute to give Italy its most lopsided loss in the history of the tournament.

Soccer By Ives: Donovan Out of South Africa friendly

17-year old Jozy Altidore could get the start in his first call-up.

Quoted: The injury reduces the number of players in the U.S. Camp to 17 and should leave Bob Bradley with some interesting decisions.

Here's video from last night. Angel had a lot of great moments that didn't end in goals (and a great assist not shown here), but here are the goals.

In related news, Eric Wynalda seems to have miraculously morphed from soccer's version of Kirk Gibson in the booth (angry, racist, contrarian) into a good color guy. As long as Alexi Lalas doesn't come up in conversation, he's pleasant and sharp.

This guy was ridiculous for the Red Bulls tonight against Chicago. Here's some old footage from his Aston Villa days.

Refugees Find Hostility and Hope on Soccer Field - New York Times

Really cool story. I'll try to dot the Sportscenter feature soon - it didn't mention the hostility part, which the city disputes. The movie rights to the Fugees story sold a few days after this story ran.

Quoted: A boys soccer team for refugees with miserable pasts brings out the best and worst in Americans.

ESPNsoccernet - US - Klinsmann withdraws candidacy as U.S. coach

Well there you go. Maybe Bradley's tenure will last a little longer than people thought, only for Klinsmann to reemerge. But it certainly sounds like they tried to hammer out a deal and couldn't get it done. A mess, or a grand plan? Undoubtedly some of the former; we'll wait and see on the latter.

Quoted: After months of speculation culminating in an intense final round of back-and-forth negotiations and erroneous reports, Juergen Klinsmann has withdrawn his name from consideration to become the next U.S. men's national team coach.
