Kottke.org has collected some great links capturing the debate around South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius and his carbon fiber blade-legs. Pistorius is a double amputee that may end up in the Olympics. While I empathize, I think this is a very slippery slope... How do we evaluate what constitutes resolving a handicap vs. what provides mechanical advantage across all sports and for all forms of disability?
Quoted: What's clear is that the seemingly politically correct replacement of "disabled" with "differently abled" is not only warranted but perhaps doesn't go far enough. How about "super abled" or "superbly abled"? Lengthen or add a bit more spring to those blades and Pistorius may win every race handily and take first in the high jump to boot.

I just got invited to do the Mt. Rainier to Pacific Relay with Ken (redelk2535) and some of his friends. Looks like a bunch of fun and it's only a few weeks after I'm doing the Mountains to Sound so I should be in shape already.

I just got signed up to do this with a group of friends. I'm doing the 6-mile Sprint to glory at the end! Time to start getting fast!

Ross and I are thinking of running this 5k on New Year's Day, 2007 at 10:30AM. If anyone else is interested in joining, let me know.

You mean I don't have to buy the special Nike iPod-Compatible Shoes?
Seriously, these guys will probably make a ton of money off of this small plastic housing for the transmitter. All hail the entrepreneurial spirit. Lets see if Nike or Apple sues.

I just signed up to run the Portland Marathon for my second time. It was a blast the first time. Let me know if any others of y'all are planning to do this or are interested. I'd love to get together on the weekends for the longer training runs!

I'm a little remiss in my running training but I just signed up for the Portland Marathon and need to jump into this training plan on the middle of week 4. Yeehaw!

OK. First of all, MapMyRun.com is really cool. I just went for a run through Maple Leaf and was able to plot it out quite easily. They also give you the option of sharing the run with people right on the site or keeping it private (as I chose to with this one). When you keep it private though, you still get a custom token so you can share the run with your friends (as I'm doing via Blue Dot). Sweet!

I am interested in potentially joining this group. When I ran the Portland marathon a couple years ago there were many "Team in Training" folks participating and they all seemed very supportive of each other and like they were having a good time. It seems like a great way to train with a bunch of likeminded people while giving something back to those less fortunate. There is an informational meeting downtown this Wednesday night, January 18th, 2006. If anybody is interested in going, let me know.
Alicia, do you know anything about these folks? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
