City hopes to dissuade suicidal jumpers

    Happy Monday!

Apparently enough people are committing suicide by jumping off of the Aurora bridge (4 a year) that they've made it a priority to do something about it.

Too bad their only short term plan is to add signs and phones rather than a net. If I were suicidal, I bet the signs and phones would piss me off more than they'd help.

The article mentions the pros and cons of having a net I think.

if there was a net, i might be tempted to try it, suicidal or not...but that's just me.

Eric, but imagine how pissed you'd be if you were suicidal and found yourself suspended in a net under the Aurora bridge. :-o

Sorry to joke. It's all very, very sad.

I want a hidden net, like the final test in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (the "leap of faith" part). Get that and it's all solved.

FWIW, the reasons for not having the net are weak. They basically say the bridge is a historical landmark and requires permitting. They also say that it will be more difficult to do the inspections every two years. Both of these should be surmountable. They say that nets work.

A leap for the lion's head?

Ya know...I didn't read this article very carefully yesterday. I just did, and it makes me so angry! Fifty people in the last two years have jumped, but there's no railing in place because it's too much trouble for the city to conduct an inspection once every two years? C'mon.

I liked the anecdote about suicides on two neighboring bridges in Washington, D.C. : when they suicide-proofed one bridge, there wasn't an increase in suicides on the other. Action when motive meets opportunity?
