    Steve Jobs' Video Dreams

A short piece explaining why Steve Jobs has not made much of an inroads into video and why the entertainment industry intends to keep it that way.

Quoted: Jobs is planning a major offensive to try to change all that, with at least some of the details to be announced at Macworld on Jan. 15. Most important, he plans to launch a movie rental service on iTunes for the first time. Apple is in furious negotiations with top studios to make their new releases available for the service, as well as for sale. BusinessWeek has learned that Apple is nearing deals with Warner Bros. (TWX) and Paramount (VIA), and has already secured deals with Disney (DIS) and 20th Century Fox. Apple is also planning a major upgrade of the slow-selling Apple TV set-top box.

Apple Tablet Laptop - Macworld 2008 - MacBook Pro Plus - Steve Jobs - Popular Mechanics

Great mac computer idea on Popular Mechanics. The only thing that looks really clunky to me is the portability in the tablet mode that they show. It just looks silly.

Quoted: PM's senior tech editor forecasts what he thinks Steve Jobs will show the computer world at this year's Apple developers conference: a touchscreen

    Thumbnailclick to play

Behind the scenes on the famous "1984" commercial by Apple. It's a 3 minute behind the scenes look followed by the final cut of the commercial. I think this still must be one of the most effective commercials ever, still garnering viewers and describing the positioning of Apple.

You should watch this just for the silly '80s music.

Quoted: This is a rare video clip I restored, which shows 'behind the scenes' of Apple's famous 1984 commercial. Enjoy this trip back in time -- ...

Apple announces 160GB Apple TV, YouTube deal

Um, great. Apple TV gets two new features, neither of which is higher quality video, even though they "require" hi definition tvs. Boo. How about fixing the Achilles heel rather than adding storage for more grainy video and a youtube plugin?

Quoted: Immediately after Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ demonstration of an Apple TV running YouTube videos at the All Things Digital Conference in Carlsbad, California, Apple formally announced the partnership via press release, along with an updated 160GB hard disk-ready version of Apple TV for a price of $399. The 160GB version of Apple TV will store up to 200 hours of video, 36,000 songs, 25,000 photos, or a combination thereof, promising four times the capacity of the original Apple TV at a $100 premium.

GigaOM » DVD Jon Fairplays Apple

DVD Jon is a bad-ass. He's cracked version after version of the Apple Fairply DRM. Now he's settig up a company to offer it as a service to anybody that wants their content to play on Apple hardware.

Quoted: DRM-buster DVD Jon has a new target in his sights, and it’s a big piece of fruit. He has reverse-engineered Apple’s Fairplay and is starting to license it to companies who want their media to play on Apple’s devices. Instead of breaking the DRM (something he’s already done), Jon has replicated it, and wants to license the technology to companies that want their content (music, movies, whatever) to play on Apple devices. This may not be good news for iTunes the store, but it could make the iPod even more popular.

Apple Plans to Inhabit Living Room - New York Times

I'm really happy with the itv that Jobs announced would be available in Q1 of next year. I can hardly wait to stream video from my home PC to my living room, even if it is only at standard tv quality so far.

Quoted: A device due out next year will wirelessly stream video and music from a Macintosh computer to a television.

Boooooo! Amazon.com's new video download store does not support Macintosh and they do not indicate if it's coming (now it gets 1 star!). Take that! That just sucks.

Good thing Apple's store will be here next week. Seems like a missed opportunity for Amazon to have gobbled up Apple users with a much broader selection than it sounds like Apple will have.
