It looks like some DIY managed to find the fix to the Macbook problem I was having a few weeks ago. Luckily, I've got a swanky new computer instead but at least now I understand why Apple kept replacing the Heat Sink (although my issue seemed unrelated to heat in that it would happen at machine startup regardless of temperature).

This is the best thread on the Apple Support forums related to the random shutdown problem I was experiencing. I hope it's through for now!

My new macbook is randomly turning off again (after resetting the PMU yesterday, it got better for a little while). Boooo! Now I have to go see if I can keep it running long enough to back it up before sending it back!

My macbook started turning off suddenly this afternoon. Turns out that something wonky had happened with the power managemnt utility (a problem I also had once on my old powerbook). This is the document showing how to reset the pmu on the macbook.
