A short piece explaining why Steve Jobs has not made much of an inroads into video and why the entertainment industry intends to keep it that way.
Quoted: Jobs is planning a major offensive to try to change all that, with at least some of the details to be announced at Macworld on Jan. 15. Most important, he plans to launch a movie rental service on iTunes for the first time. Apple is in furious negotiations with top studios to make their new releases available for the service, as well as for sale. BusinessWeek has learned that Apple is nearing deals with Warner Bros. (TWX) and Paramount (VIA), and has already secured deals with Disney (DIS) and 20th Century Fox. Apple is also planning a major upgrade of the slow-selling Apple TV set-top box.

DVD Jon is a bad-ass. He's cracked version after version of the Apple Fairply DRM. Now he's settig up a company to offer it as a service to anybody that wants their content to play on Apple hardware.
Quoted: DRM-buster DVD Jon has a new target in his sights, and it’s a big piece of fruit. He has reverse-engineered Apple’s Fairplay and is starting to license it to companies who want their media to play on Apple’s devices. Instead of breaking the DRM (something he’s already done), Jon has replicated it, and wants to license the technology to companies that want their content (music, movies, whatever) to play on Apple devices. This may not be good news for iTunes the store, but it could make the iPod even more popular.

I'm really happy with the itv that Jobs announced would be available in Q1 of next year. I can hardly wait to stream video from my home PC to my living room, even if it is only at standard tv quality so far.
Quoted: A device due out next year will wirelessly stream video and music from a Macintosh computer to a television.

According to this, Amazon.com's Digital Download store is schedule to be released later this week, just days before the September 12th inveiling of the itunes store. It sounds like Amazon has a big head start on the actual selection.
Quoted: The digital movie business is about to get a shot in the arm from the Internet's two biggest media retailers. Amazon.com will launch its movie download service later this week, numerous sources confirmed, while Apple will start selling films on Tuesday as part of iTunes.

And now, the lineup of video downloads is also making itself available. Did anyone doubt that it would be Disney-heavy? Considering that Jobs and Iger are pretty cozy (and Jobs is on Disney's board from the sale of Pixar), I doubt it.
It makes me wonder if they're trying to keep that content exclusive for their product release. Will Amazon.com have the same access to those films for their service?

This movie looks interesting in that it's a bit of a filmic experiment. The whole thing is shot in a side-by-side format with two shots at once. While I think it would be complex to edit, it does seem to open up nice storytelling possibilities. It's probably worth seeing...
Quoted: Tells the compelling story of a couple whose reunion at a wedding reception ignites a mysterious attraction for each other that is deeper and more emotionally perilous than they are actually willing to admit.
