Kottke.org has collected some great links capturing the debate around South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius and his carbon fiber blade-legs. Pistorius is a double amputee that may end up in the Olympics. While I empathize, I think this is a very slippery slope... How do we evaluate what constitutes resolving a handicap vs. what provides mechanical advantage across all sports and for all forms of disability?
Quoted: What's clear is that the seemingly politically correct replacement of "disabled" with "differently abled" is not only warranted but perhaps doesn't go far enough. How about "super abled" or "superbly abled"? Lengthen or add a bit more spring to those blades and Pistorius may win every race handily and take first in the high jump to boot.

FIFA has banned high-altitide soccer and the Bolivians are revolting. It is pretty funny. When I went to Bolivia, I quickly found that the National team was pretty marginal but they have a great home record because their opponents suck wind so hard at 11k feet.
Quoted: "Brazilians are wimps," said 71-year-old Beatriz Ordonez, who spent Wednesday morning dancing in the streets of La Paz, merrily waving a yellow handkerchief to the beat of the music and not even breathing hard.

After reading all the stuff on the Steve Pyons debacle (him getting fired for "ethnic slurs" on FOX), I agree with King Kaufman here - it was just a very poor attempt at humor by an unintelligent ex-jock. He should have been fired for inane commentary, not for this "ethnic slur."
Quoted: Fox fires Steve Lyons for the wrong reason. Can we think of one for Thom Brennaman now?

I watched the end of the Bridgestone Invitational yesterday and got to see Tiger Woods come from behind, go into a playoff, and then win - again. He's playing the best golf I've ever seen him play. Even when his full swing is off a bit, as it was yesterday, he finds ways to win. Amazing!
Quoted: Woods ran his total to 52 victories on the PGA Tour. He boosted his tour playoff record to 10-1, including 2-0 at Firestone. But Woods knew he was lucky just to get to extra holes.
