The Alchemist (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I read a book of poems by Rumi a few weeks back. In it, there's a story of a man who travels to find a treasure as shown to him in a dream.

Plot similar to the overarching plot of the alchemist.

BTW: read rumi if you get a chance. it's not so much poetry as broken up prose (i find poetry hard to comprehend usually). it's truly beautiful.

Quoted: . In a modern translation the story (told in verse) is titled "In Baghdad, Dreaming of Cairo: In Cairo, Dreaming of Baghdad". (The Essential Rumi, transl. Coleman Barks, New York: HarperCollins, 1995). In it, a poor man in Baghdad who inherits a lot of money and land only to squander it quickly and become poor again has a dream, in which a voice tells him to go to Cairo and dig in a certain spot to find his wealth. When he gets there, while wandering the streets and begging for coins he is picked up by a night patrol. When he tells his story to the patrolman, the latter calls him a fool and tells him of a similar dream (which he had dismissed) about a place in Baghdad, describing the very street and house in which the poor man lives.

Stuff-onomics: Hidden Side of What You Own | ThinkSimpleNow.com

Quoted: * Box it. Date it. Toss it. - For stuff that you don’t want to throw away, yet have no immediate needs for. Put them in a box, close it and date the box that’s one or two years from today. Store the box in an attic or closet. Annually check on these boxes, when the date have passed, donate the box without looking to see what’s inside. If you don’t know what’s inside and haven’t used it in over a year, likely it’s not something you need anyways. And by not looking what’s inside, you won’t get attached to these things you don’t need in the first place.

TED | Talks | Isabel Allende: Tales of passion (video)

Quoted: TED Talks In one of the most beloved talks from TED2007, novelist Isabel Allende talks about writing, women, passion, feminism. She tells the stories of powerful women she has known, some larger-than-life (listen for a beauty tip from Sophia Loren), and some simply living with grace, dignity and ingenuity in a world that, in too many ways, still treats women unjustly.

Lions, Witches & Wizards

just heard this on the radio
Quoted: Walk into the children's section of any bookstore and the magic wands and secret portals almost materialize in front of you. Wizards, witches, demons, time travel, dragons, orphans, orphaned dragons – doesn't anyone know how to write a non-magical book anymore?! In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, we'll examine the boom in children's fantasy publishing. Is this a Golden Age for children's books, or a marketing feeding frenzy?
