The natives of Diego Garcia were kicked out of their homes so that their island could be used as a military base for the UK and the US (the only military base in the Indian Ocean).
It's been 30 years since they were forced to leave (most of them were living in Mauritius), and they are finally getting a chance to go back to visit their homes. I can only imagine how overwhelming this must be for them.

After only reading the first page, I'm homesick... and hungry. Merci, Nilesh :PQuoted: The food reflects the diversity of the people. Dinner in Mauritius might be prawn egg rolls, octopus vindaloo, curried biryani rice, hearts of palm in hollandaise sauce and a pineapple mousse washed down with vanilla tea.

Heard about the mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus from my Dad last night. Mauritius has reportedly confirmed 8000 people affected by this virus. 2 people died recently, but the government has not acknowledged that the deaths were linked to the virus.
Reunion Island has it way worst than Mauritius -- 17% of its population is already affected by Chikungunya, so this is a pretty scary situation for the region. Oh, and there is no known cure or vaccine. <sigh>
Quoted: "Chikungunya" fever, for which there is no known cure or vaccine, had affected some 130,000 people on the island off the southeast coast of Africa. Bertrand said that was 20,000 more than a week ago.

A public experiment that was better in theory than in practice: "In the end, the restrooms, installed in early 2004, had become so filthy, so overrun with drug abusers and prostitutes, that although use was free of charge, even some of the city’s most destitute people refused to step inside them."
