Are e-Books Really More Eco-friendly? | Shelf Talk

Quoted: So I have paid little heed to the claims of providers of digital content and readers that e-books are eco-friendly alternatives to their paper cousins.  Perhaps they consume less paper – assuming that people aren’t printing them out – but what about the environmental costs of producing, maintaining, powering, and replacing the readers and the servers that provide them with content?
    ...
According to the study, the Kindle usually offsets the carbon emitted in its creation within the first year.  Emma Ritch, the author of the report, writes that “Any additional years of use result in net carbon savings, equivalent to an average of 168 kg of CO2 per year (the emissions produced in the manufacture and distribution of 22.5 books).”  The impact is only expected to improve as sales of the Kindle increase.

10 stories behind Dr. Seuss stories - CNN.com

Some interesting Dr. Seuss book facts ...

Quoted: 1. In case you haven't read "The Lorax," it's widely recognized as Dr. Seuss' take on environmentalism and how humans are destroying nature. Loggers were so upset about the book that some groups within the industry sponsored "The Truax," a similar book -- but from the logging point of view.

SciTechBlog: Blog Archive - Melting glaciers vs. melting economy « - Blogs from CNN.com

Quoted: As arguably the biggest of those stories, the financial meltdown may have the most profound effect on the Poznan meeting. “The financial crisis will have an impact on climate change. You already are seeing around the world a number of wind-energy projects being pushed back,” said Yvo de Boer, head of the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). One of them is the high-profile U.S. effort from Oklahoma oilman T. Boone Pickens. Pickens launched a massive media campaign calling on the U.S. to increase wind and natural gas production in place of oil imports this summer, then said last month that portions of the project were “on hold” due to the global economic turmoil.

As checks near, fishermen resigned to disappointment: Exxon Valdez spill | adn.com

A 20 year wait for restitution from Exxon? Did they (Exxon) not have the money? Losers. (and the pic with the C. Everett is for T.)

Quoted: After a nearly 20-year wait, thousands of commercial fishermen and other plaintiffs are on the brink of collecting punitive damages for the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989.
    ...
But the payments are not seen as a victory among fishermen, who are still mad about the oil spill as well as the long struggle to win punitive damages from Exxon Mobil Corp.
    ...
"It's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick," said William Yankee, a Prince William Sound salmon fisherman who's on the list for nearly $58,000.

    SciTechBlog: Blog Archive - World’s 4th-largest lake almost gone « - Blogs from CNN.com

That germ-warfare bit is terrifying. Can they not just completely fire-bomb that place or something?

Quoted: The latest satellite image of the Aral Sea shows a disappearing body of water. What was the world’s fourth-largest freshwater lake is almost gone due to an engineering project gone wrong, despite a last-ditch effort to save it.
    ...
Another potential threat may come from Vozrozhdenie (rebirth), which was once a large island in the center of the Aral Sea. Vozrozhdenie was a Soviet germ-warfare facility during the Cold War. The island is now physically connected to the land, increasing security risks and enabling easier transmission of any possible biological hazards on this island to a larger environment.

    ...
The televised footage showed Putin, deep in the woods, placing a collar with a tracking device around the knocked-out tiger's neck and patting its cheek like a pet. "She'll remember us," he said.

Jetta TDI vs. Toyota Prius in mpg challenge to San Francisco | Local News | KING5.com | News for Seattle, Washington

If the Jetta gets the same gas mileage as the Prius but takes diesel (which is the most expensive fuel right now), how can Auburn Volkswagen argue that the TDI is the preferrable option?

Quoted: One Auburn car dealer says he has a way to save on gas money, but the gas-saving car he's promoting isn't what you might think. He says his car can beat the nation's top selling hybrid, the Toyota Prius.
    ...
Volkswagon's new Jetta Turbo Diesel hasn't even hit the Seattle area market, but one Auburn Volkswagon dealer is throwing down the gauntlet to the king of hybrid sales. The Prius touts 47 miles per gallon, while the new Jetta TDI turbo diesel touts 47. The challenge: A road trip from Auburn, Wash., to San Francisco on one tank of gas.

Feeling thrifty, the thirsty reach for tap water - Food Inc.- msnbc.com

    Mmm ... tap water.

Quoted: Tap water is making a comeback. With a day's worth of bottled water costing hundreds to thousands of dollars a year, more people are opting to slurp water that comes from the sink.
    ...
The lousy economy may be accomplishing what environmentalists have been trying to do for years — wean people off the disposable plastic bottles of water that were sold as stylish, portable, healthier and safer than water from the tap.
