Swim with whale sharks at Georgia Aquarium - CNN.com

I hate when every story about sharks has to invoke the "Jaws" word ... seriously, if you have ever watched a program on whale sharks you know that they are slow and quiet and they feed by swimming with their mouths open and catching what they can. Not exactly a man-killer. The media is just perpetuating a tired stereotype of sharks.

Quoted: It might have been the setting for a "Jaws" movie.
    ...
Six snorkelers wading like ducks in a row, cruising just below the surface of the water while watching exotic fish dart beneath them. It was all very peaceful, until the mysterious whale shark appeared out of the deep blue.
    ...
The whale shark is one of the most perplexing and elusive creatures in the ocean, still largely a mystery even to the marine biologists who have dedicated careers to studying the creatures.

Overfishing of sharks makes scallops vanish: study - Yahoo! News

Ahh ... the food web. Didn't we learn about this in elementary school? Why is it news to people that removing a lead predator will have effects down the system?

Quoted: With most of the great predatory sharks -- bull, great white, dusky and hammerhead -- gone from northwest Atlantic waters, the rays and skates the sharks normally feed on had a population explosion, the scientists said in the journal Science.

Talking fish: Wide variety of sounds discovered - LiveScience - MSNBC.com

I think this article should be used by kids whose parents are trying to force fish on them as a "quiet pet". In all my time cleaning fish tanks, though, I never heard them make a peep.

Quoted: Increasingly scientists are discovering unusual mechanisms by which fish make and hear secret whispers, grunts and thumps to attract mates and ward off the enemy.
