Canadian zoo investigates puzzling stingray deaths | Science | Reuters

Very strange mass deaths of stingrays ... they said there were no signs that a zoo visitor affected the rays in the touchpool but that seems like the most likely thing if indeed there were no problems with filtration or temperature.

Quoted: Officials at the Calgary Zoo remained baffled on Tuesday as they tried to puzzle out just why 34 of their stingrays suddenly died.

The juvenile cownose stingrays, about the size of a dinner plate, were kept in a "petting" tank where visitors were able to touch them, a common feature in a number of North American zoos and aquariums, according to the zoo officials in the Western Canadian city.

Berlin zoo accused of profiting from slaughter | Environment | The Guardian

    Revolting.

    Discovery News : Discovery Channel

It's just odd when you think that zoos used to not bother finding out what animals actually ate in the wild. And I'm still not sure that Jell-O should be on the menu, even if it IS sugar-free.

Quoted: Gorillas on Weight Watchers? Polar bears slurping sugar-free Jell-O shots? Giraffes nibbling alfalfa biscuits?

The days of letting visitors throw marshmallows to the animals are mostly history at zoos around the country, replaced by a growing focus on diet and nutrition that parallels the fitness craze in humans.

And thanks to mounting research on wild animals' food needs, today's zoo staffers are trying new feeding tricks to keep their lions and tigers and bears healthy and happy.

Avoiding obesity is part of the program.

Woodland Park Zoo going smoke-free | Local News | KING5.com | News for Seattle, Washington

This is REALLY good news. I don't like having to walk my kid through a cloud of toxins.

Quoted: Beginning Thursday, there will be no smoking allowed at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo. The new policy bans smoking on the zoo's grounds. Smoking already was ...

Zoo Sells Gorilla's Art On eBay - Entertainment News Story - WCVB Boston

Does it bother anyone else that a pair of western lowland gorillas are named Little Joe and Okie? Part of what I like about the Woodland Park Zoo is that they give region-appropriate names to their animals for the most part.

Quoted: BOSTON -- In an online world where almost anything can be found for sale, a gorilla's paintings are now up for bid on eBay. Tuesday, September 11, 2007.

Monkeys, capybaras are zoo's odd couple | Oddly Enough | Reuters.com

This is interesting that they tried this but it seems to defeat the purpose of a zoo to have species interacting that wouldn't normally inhabit the same areas in the wild.

    Quoted: They're Japan's odd couple.

Capybaras and squirrel monkeys, unlikely neighbors in the wild, are living in the same enclosure at a zoo outside Tokyo and so far, they're loving it.

Fatal Jaguar Attack on Zookeeper Probed - MSNBC Wire Services - MSNBC.com

Another big cat fatality. When will people realize that keeping a big cat in captivity doesn't make it a tame animal ...

Quoted: A zookeeper killed by a jaguar was attacked after she opened the door to its enclosure, and authorities were investigating Sunday why she may have disregarded a ban on entering exhibits when a big cat is inside.

BBC NEWS | Tiger kills girl at Chinese zoo

Hmm ... sounds like posing with a tiger is not the best idea ... I don't like the part that says "staff beat the tiger until it released the girl". Staff should have beat the girl's mom for going along with such a stupid idea.

Quoted: A six-year-old girl has been killed by a tiger at a zoo in Kunming in south-western China's Yunnan province. The girl was posing for photographs ...
