In honor of Dave Niehaus... This is a story I wrote sitting at my work computer at a Grand Rapids HR firm back in 2000. I was homesick, so forgive some of the over-the-top description... being in a depressingly flat and cold state will do that to a person...

    The Shrimp Cocktail Goes Latino

    Mmmm, looks nummy

Quoted: I’ve been seeing these wonderful pile-ups of cold saucy shellfish in shrimp-cocktail dishes, or parfait dishes, that are essentially shrimp cocktails–with flavorings other than horseradish bolstering the ketchup.

    BlownInInsulation.gif

It was a little more impressive than this, but Rob and I got our house walls insulated this week, where they drill holes in the wall and blow it in. What a difference! And just in time for the cold snap. Costs a lot, but we figure we'll make it up on electric bills sooner rather than later. Noticeable difference. Our 101-year-old home is now cozy :-) We used Ken Root's Insulation Service in Arlington ... they don't have a website or else I'd dot that. Recommend them -- quality work.

OOoo, a scientist and a poet. Kruse, you were born two centuries too late. (Sorry Derek)

Quoted: Anders Celsius (1701-1744) was a Swedish astronomy professor and physicist, perhaps most famous for his temperature scale. He was also a writer of poetry and popular science.

I've only looked at the photos, but an interesting blog from Katrina territory.

Quote: My mom was feeling very hopeful through all this. Then we met with FEMA this morning. After two hours waiting in line for it's cold bureaucratic embrace, her hope started to flicker. This is what it looks like when poor people have lost it all, and are told to get in line. Which line? Did you fill out that form? I hear they suspended the vouchers. Who do I call for shelter? Call this 800 number to get your number. But sir, I don't have a phone. Go to this website to get a number. But sir, I don't have a computer, or a home to put it in, or a phone to connect it to.

    Get in line, ma'am.
