Nick Gonzalez of TechCrunch wrote a very nice review about our name change and new features. It's been some months in the planning and agonizing over a name change - it's nice to have it completed now.

Larry Halff and Chris Masina (sp) talk about the flame-out of Magnolia. I think, rather disturbingly, they start this video podcast by chukling about loosing all their user's data! I'd say their users would not find this that funny.
Larry seemed genuinely sorry about the mistakes he made, and was quite contrite as the video progressed.
- Lost 1/2 Terabyte of data
- Did not test backup system
- Had only one backup (not a rolling backup)
- Ignored operational issues/performance as site grew
- 4 mac mini's running as servers, 1 main DB server, 1 backup server
- disk was software raid - file system corruption caused this loss
- mag.nolia "never made money" (completely self funded)
- built a strong community, regardless
- "destination social bookmarking" does not have a good prognosis - more people are using, Facebook, say for sharing links
- ma.gnolia will come back hosted on AWS with better backup systems in place
- will relaunch as private beta only(!) - invitation only
- Suggest that web sites disclose more about their infrastructure and backup procedures, so users can be more comfortable knowing how their data is being managedQuoted: This week Chris and Larry discuss the Ma.gnolia's data loss, what is has meant for the service and in the community, and what may be coming in the future. This episode is available both in audio and video. The audio version is available on iTunes and here: http://citizengarden.com/2009/02/15/episode-11-whither-magnolia/

Extensive outage at ma.gnolia.com.
Quoted: Dear Ma.gnolia Community Members or Visitor,
...
Early on the West-coast morning of Friday, January 31st, Ma.gnolia experienced every web service's worst nightmare: data corruption and loss. For Ma.gnolia, this means that the service is offline and members' bookmarks are unavailable, both through the website itself and the API. As I evaluate recovery options, I can't provide a certain timeline or prognosis as to to when or to what degree Ma.gnolia or your bookmarks will return; only that this process will take days, not hours.
...
I will of course keep you appraised here and in our Twitter account.
...
Most importantly, I apologize to all of you who have made Ma.gnolia a home for your bookmarks and community. I know that many of you rely on Ma.gnolia in your day to day work and play flow to safely host you bookmarks, keeping them available around the clock, and that this is a difficult disruption.
...
Sincerely,
Larry

newsgator has a SharePoint extension called Social Sites, that creates a personal profile, recommends friends and feeds via common interests and tags, and also uses Social Bookmarking to bring in content from outside the sharepoint site.

Nice list of social bookmarking sites, sorted by (published) PageRank. Does a nice job of grouping sites into tiers by popularity. Faves is listed as a PR6 site.

You must be Mike's friend before you can comment on this Fave.I just /love/ the concept of "anti-social" bookmarkers. I love to see what my friends are bookmarking, but I am NOT interested in blogging.
