Scratch is a programming environment from the MIT Media lab designed for making interactive applications that are fun for kids. They use a tile metaphor to program graphically - kind of like Lego Mindstorms. I personally think this style is stupid and tedious; if you can program, you can type - and you can express yourself much faster by typing than by trying to figure our how to manipulate blocks together.
Cross platform (Mac and PC) - and it looks like the web site can execute the programs created on the client by running them in the Java VM.

Looks interesting...kids need better programming environments that are not too complex, yet still allow them to create things that are cool (relative to the types of programs they see every day).
Back in my day, we were happy to print our name 100 times in a row on the screen!
