Is this a joke? Really lame MS jobs posting.

Quoted: Ok, search no further, this is the one you have been looking for. Everyone who comes to Microsoft dreams of working on “That” project that will change the world and represent a real shift in technology. This is one of those projects. Let me ask you a few questions: Do you like working on tough problems that impact virtually every customer across multiple groups, audiences and segments? Are you challenged by how “time” is used in your applications, in particular, the various different calendars of the world and the geopolitical overlays on top of them such as time zones (TZ) and daylight savings time (DST)? Are you comfortable with starting from a blank slate and building something new? If you answered yes to those questions then you need to come talk to me about the Unified Time Platform.
    ...
The Unified Time Platform project is an outgrowth of our involvement with www.CalConnect.org as well as our participation with Microsoft groups who rely on DST & TZ information in their product. The project objective is to build an industry standard time zone service which will provide a central, definitive repository of time zone and daylight savings time rules, create a set of industry interfaces to leverage this repository, and evangelize and drive the use of this service by Microsoft products and software developers across the entire industry. We are at the startup faze and are looking for a core of strong developers to help define and build on the vision of a Unified Time Platform. This position is primary to the success of the project. You should live and breathe web based services. Understand the various technologies available and be able to help pick the best of breed for getting the job done.

    Vista's last mile | CNET News.com

Large packaged software products are insane to ship. I remember these "war room" meetings to decide on shipping Office. Windows must be even more insane with that many more components and interdependent code.

There is no way to get all the pieces "right" at one time. So why is Microsoft still shipping "monolithic" software? Is it purely marketing?

I do believe you have to have a stable foundation on top of which to deliver other components; but building one massive platform for everything is now an obviously untenable way to build and deliver software.
