I really like the "autoruns" program to show you all the things that are booting on your machine at startup.
I've been really disgusted that so many programs are added to the boot process when you install software (or are even preloaded on a new machine).
Autoruns will show you all the programs that start when you boot your machine (see the Logon tag). I counted over 28(!) individual programs an mine. Most of these are NOT to the benefit of the USER, but rather serve the software vendor (by either spying on you, or allowing them to market to you).
I turned off 13 of these startup programs, and saved myself a few seconds of boot time.
One of my favorite features of autoruns is that you can right-click to Search Online to find more information about a particular *.exe program to see if it is virus/spyware/useless.

AWS is adding Windows support "this fall". The pricing for EC2 instances will reflect the delta for the windows license.

mike | Shared With: Everyone - Feb 27 2008 | microsoft, legal, eu, antitrust, formats, protocols, windowsEU just levied another $1.3B fine against MS despite this "announcement". What excuse did MS *ever* have for keeping proprietary such interfaces as:
- NTFS file system
- Active Directory
- Exchange ServerNot only is it bad business - it's also anti-competitive. MS: learn to compete on the merits of your products (clients or servers) and NOT on the illegal tying of one to the other.
Microsoft needs to provide the documentation not JUST to a bunch of API's that allow limited interoperability to these products. It also should enable RECPLACEMENT by a 3rd party of either clients or servers. For example, has anyone made a clone of:
- Exchange Server
- Domain Controller
- Exchange ClientWould there not be a large and profitable market for any of these? The fact that no one has, tells me that MS protocols are not yet "open enough".
Quoted: As an immediate next step, starting today Microsoft will openly publish on MSDN over 30,000 pages of documentation for Windows client and server protocols that were previously available only under a trade secret license through the Microsoft Work Group Server Protocol Program (WSPP) and the Microsoft Communication Protocol Program (MCPP). Protocol documentation for additional products, such as Office 2007 and all of the other high-volume products covered by these principles, will be published in the upcoming months.

WinHex is a much more useful disk editor - this one (from Microsoft NT 4 Resource Kit) is pretty bare bones.

Another case of Microsoft's "cure" being worse than the disease. I can't extract a ZIP'ed files download from Google Documents, and it tells me that the file is potentially dangerous, so it won't let me open it.
Here's the rub, unlike the dialog shown here, I don't have an "Unblock" option in my file properties - so I'm just flat locked out of a file I want to open.
... I think I traced my particular problem to an invalid ZIP file. The file names include a ":" character, which, I guess, is not allowed. Even WinZip was refusing to open these files (though it told me correctly that it was a file name problem, and not a security problem - MS gave me the WRONG ERROR MESSAGE).

I rail about Windows design decisions all the time. Maybe this book will help me understand the seemingly idiotic design decisions that we, as users, have to deal with (mostly having to do with thread blocking of the networking layer and long time-outs).

The 23 year history of Windows, told in 11 screen shots. Remember, when Windows 1.0 came out, seeing ANY color on the screen (besides green) was a technical innovation. And most machines had a pallette of 16 (count-em) colors. No wonder it looked so garish.
Fonts also look like crap. But 640x480 was HIRES back in the day, so what do you expect?

You must be Mike's friend before you can comment on this Fave.i'm a fan of all the sysinternals tools. hopefully, they don't start sucking now that microsoft has acquired sysinternals.
Thanks for this. I hate all the "helpful" stuff that gets crammed on my machine behind my back into the autorun stuff and great to see something like this.
I think procmon is my favorite so far. I hate hearing my disk drive whirring when I'm not specifically doing any I/O. Great app to see who's doing stuff behind your back.
I'm 100% with you! Hope Ms leaves Mark & Company alone.
