U.S.: Iraq's Al Qaeda Boss Still On Loose, Military Denies Claims By Iraqi Officials That Abu Ayyub al-Masri Captured In Mosul - CBS News

Reported capture yesterday now being denied - "this guy had a similar name"??? Jees!

Quoted: The U.S. military says the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq has been not been captured, despite a claim by the Iraqi government. A military spokeswoman says it was a case of mistaken identity on the part of the Iraqi security forces.

Senate Takes Up War Debate - The Caucus - Politics - New York Times Blog

I wish Congress would grow a pair. The artificiality of the Petraeus report on Iraq progress really infuriates me. He says it's "irresponsible" to try to predict what troop strengths we'll have in Iraq after summer '08. I strongly disagree.

The one variable we CAN predict is how many people we keep in Iraq. And that number should be coming down much more expeditiously that we are currently planning.

This whole SURGE-and-PURGE smoke screen is just masking the status quo - we are keeping the same number of troops in Iraq into the foreseeable future.

We no longer have a compelling interest to keep troops in Iraq - so we should bring them home. Congress has the power of the purse, so they should make it clear that our appetite to continue to fund this war is limited and we should ramp down spending to zero over the next two years.

This is NOT a patriotic/support-our-troops issue. It's an issue of listening to the will of the people - and the people want this war to end.

Quoted: “We hope so, because the American public wants us to change course,” Senator Carl Levin, the Michigan Democrat who chairs the Armed Services Committee, said on CBS’s Face the Nation. “And what the president is offering is the illusion of change, not real change.”

House Passes Iraq Resolution With 17 Votes From G.O.P. - New York Times

The beginning of the end ... I hope.

Quoted: The House voted 246 to 182 today to denounce President Bush’s plan to send more American troops to Iraq. Two Democrats voted against the non-binding resolution.

Scoop: Handwritten Notes Implicate Bush in Plame Affair

Note by Cheney indicating that Bush may have been directly involved in using Libby to discredit Joseph Wilson. There's a crossed-out, but clearly legible, reference to "this Pres." as the origin of the request to Libby to smear Wilson.

Quoted: Dick Cheney: "not going to protect one staffer and sacrifice the guy this Pres. asked to stick his head in the meat grinder because of the incompetence of others."

Unclaimed Territory - by Glenn Greenwald: The toxicity of Joe Lieberman's treason accusations

Senator Joe Lieberman thinks we should all just shut up and not even debate our president's war strategy. I strongly disagree.

Quoted: To Joe Lieberman, anyone who opposes whatever Iraq plan he happens to be currently favoring is a frivolous, defeat-hungry traitor -- giving "some comfort [encouragement]" to the "enemy." He's really the Senate's modern-day Joe McCarthy, smearing everyone's character and impugning everyone's motives who doesn't march faithfully along behind the President.
    ...
What is more pernicious than for a politician, in a Senate hearing with the country's new top General in Iraq, to expressly equate disagreement with their war views with treason?

Amazon.com: State of Denial: Bush at War, Part III: Books: Bob Woodward

Bob Woodward's new book seems like the most damning in his series of books covering the Bush Presidency, and our descent into war. 60-minutes interviewed Woodward last Sunday - the revelations were astounding. In secret, the administration knew that the war was getting increasingly violent, with the insurgency growing stronger every day.

In public, they are feeding the American People a story of hope and progress....stay the course.

The scariest thing is that Kissinger is back in the picture, and has become among the President and Cheney's closest advisors. Kissinger is playing out his "victory is the only option" plan that so failed him in Vietnam.
