Again, not sure this is denial or reality, but it is food for thought.
Quoted: RVC is contrarian. They invest when most people are scared and sell when everybody is bullish. MVC is the opposite. Smart MVC invest when the trends are obvious and get out quick, the classic "flip artist". Dumb MVC invest when the trends are obvious and don't get out in time. But both smart and dumb MVC are primarily trend spotters.

Futures are pointing to another down day in the U.S. markets today.
Quoted: "Investors are now afraid that the world is going to enter a depression," said Jesper Koll with Tantallon Capitol Research in Tokyo.

"Japan is a leading indicator for the world economy and prospects for the world economy are not for a soft landing," Koll said. "They are for a recession, if not a depression."

It's really unnerving that the executives at the failing banks and insurance agencies are still reaping benefits from their poor business practices that taxpayers are now bailing them out of.
Quoted: In his testimony, Mr. Greenberg said his successors were responsible for the record losses that led to the bailout. “When I left A.I.G., the company operated in 130 countries and employed approximately 92,000 people,” Mr. Greenberg said in a statement. “Today, the company we built up over almost four decades has been virtually destroyed.”

I think this is a little misleading since it's based on YOY changes..and Seattle was ranked the #8 BEST place last year.
Quoted: But in cities like Seattle, Jacksonville, Fla., and St. Louis—the hardest major cities in which to sell a home—even sellers who have substantially lowered their prices aren’t finding it easy to move their houses.
...
Here’s the specific entry for #1 ranked Seattle. Here’s the whole list of Forbes’ hardest places to sell a home:

The fall of WaMu is sad because it was the bank I grew up with as a child, when they'd send reps to my school to collect my $1/week and to teach me about responsible saving. It really was the neighborhood bank that will now be swallowed whole by a banking conglomerate which will likely rebrand the entire WaMu institution.
I don't think the effects on Seattle will be as devastating as this author suggests, though. Though it will cause layoffs, restructuring and the like, WaMu's general banking infrastructure should remain. I do feel terribly for the many employees that are headed for layoffs though, as their career has been, and will continue to be for a while, quite up-in-the-air.

The carnage continues. I do think it's a good time to start looking for smart buys (e.g. market cap near book value).

My latest blog entry...
1 FaverViewed: 2 TimesQuoted: It hit me like a ton of bricks today - this will be my first time voting in Washington State elections. So, it seems problematic that I know more about Gov. Corzine's record in New Jersey or Mayor Bloomberg's attempt to seek a third term in New York than I do about Gregoire and Rossi.
