I saw on Facebook that Mike Arrington is "extremely pissed off at the world." So I went over to his personal blog to see what's up. It seems the Blogworld conference "booked" him as an attendee without getting his commitment to say yes. Everyone was disappointed when he did not show up.
As a result - Mike is putting his foot down and not attending ANY conferences for the next year. I can see how these speaking engagements are a big distraction for him. And can you imagine the size of his INBOX trying to stay on top of everything going on?
Here's wishing Mike some peace - and having fun doing what he loves to do.

Mint one the TC40 contest. Would you give your bank details to a stranger? If so, here's my email address...

Michael took a step down in my eyes for the quality of his analysis. I've heard from so many people that tagged is EVIL. They are big time spammers.
So where does Michael get off saying they are "focused on security of its users first" - with no mention about the uproar about their immoral and probably illegal email practices (sending spam to all your friends without your permission).
What is great is that many of the commenters on his post called him to task. What's NOT great is that he never responded to them here.
TechCrunch is a great filter for what's new in Web technology startups - but he's lost some authority in my eyes as far as the quality of his analysis.
Will this hurt TechCrunch? Our reputation is our most valuable commodity; I think this shows how quickly it can be damaged.

mike | Shared With: Everyone - Mar 18 2007 | spam, blogs, techcrunch, captcha, akismetMichael Arrington blogged about Akisment filtering out 15,000 SPAM comments per day (!) on their site.
I'm wondering why CAPTCHA is not a better solution.
a) It doesn't require a server-to-server call to validate the comment.
b) Is more reliable as a "real-human" filter. Can Akismet really stop someone determined to post "spam" on his site by hand, anyway? Spam is in the eye of the beholder. I don't know what Akismet's algorithm is, but it seems to be it's a huge scale issue to have all blogs use a centralized service to perform this function.
Akismet is tailored for Wordpress comment spam, but can also be used for other forms on online posting. There's a developer API here:

Post about coRank. I added a comment here.
Quoted: I'm the “Head Cheerleader” at Blue Dot. You’re right, it is an evolving space - not sure it’s that informative to say anymore that this service is just like these other two added together (though that’s a convenient shorthand for people trying to understand what these new sites do).
...
Rumors that MySpace is adding a bookmarking feature now change the equation too.
...
Blue Dot started as “social bookmarking” - much like del.icio.us, but focused on showing users a summary of what their friends are “dotting”. In January, we too, expanded our offering by adding Blue Dot Buzz - showing the most popular bookmarks across our network.
...
I think our ultimate vision is much like that described for coRank - we’re trying to make it easier for users to find the most interesting content on the web, without being overwhelmed by noise.
