Rollbase PaaS Service To Launch, Invites For TechCrunch Readers

A new online database development platform. There's a demo video here - looks really powerful. As opposed to Blist, they have chosen an AJAX platform.

If sites are targetted at teams (i.e., not public web sites) - I'd say the choice between Flash and AJAX is a wash. But if you want to support public sites - HTML/AJAX based apps are clear winner as they are search-engine friendly.

Quoted: Rollbase will tomorrow officially launch its do-it-yourself, on-demand application development and delivery platform offering Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) for users who aren’t programming experts. ...

(I thought I faved this yesterday - disappeared?)

It's great to see a Seattle-based startup getting such big A-round. blist will certainly be a serious competitor in the online database market.

    blist DEMO 08 Launch Video

5 minute video of Blist - the "database for the rest of us" created by blist blog » Blog Archive » blist DEMO 08 Launch VideoKevin Merritt's Seattle startup.

Still seems like it looks very complex. I also am repulsed (is that too strong a word) by the "database is a spreadsheet" metaphor. Also not that this is a Rich Application - not a web site. I think that's a mistake as well.

Those plucky penguins--already passé. Whales and polar bears--just fads. But dinosaurs have kept their scaly grip our imaginations. The new DinoBase from the University of Bristol in the U.K. offers plenty of information for everyone from dino dabblers to devotees who want to check whether there's such an animal as "Elvisaurus." (There isn't.) A database holds vital statistics--such as length, weight, and time span--for several hundred dinosaur species, including Stygimoloch spinifer (above), a 3-meter-long herbivore from what is now Montana. Its elaborate headgear might have served as a weapon or as a lure for mates. Visitors can tour a gallery of dino art or dig into the site's forum for announcements of fresh finds and the latest on current debates, such as whether commercial fossil hunters hurt or help paleontology.
