Just catching up on the news that Maurice Clemmons was shot on Dec 1st. Was Maurice setting a trap to kill the first responder to a reported stolen vehicle. That seems plausible, but why then did he approach the police car with his gun in his pants, instead of drawn and ready to fire?
I can't imagine the stress placed on Officer Benjamin Kelly in making the identification and decision to shoot Clemmons in just a matter of seconds.
Quoted: Maurice Clemmons body was probably still warm when I started getting text messages and e-mails from my friends in the Seattle/Tacoma area early Monday morning. The manhunt was over. The mainstream

Chris was at this party, but left before the police arrived. From the video I saw, the students were largely being quiet and just sitting in the street. Of course, police don't like to be defied when they ordered the students to "disperse" - so they attacked the students with batons, pepper shells, and Tasers. Nine students ended up being arrested (of some 1,000 that were there).

I saw this on this on the news last week. This is a really stunning case of police abuse of power - arresting and DETAINING someone merely for taking photographs of the police arresting someone on a public street in Seattle.
This settlement seems pretty small. I'd really like to see much more outrage on the part of Seattle citizens to demand more of an explanation about what in the H**** the officers thought they were doing in this case. What possible justification did they have to arrest and book this man into jail - they held him for about an hour and threatened to charge him with endangering an officer!
Quoted: The City of Seattle paid $8,000 to a photographer who was wrongfully arrested a year ago after he snapped two pictures of police officers arresting another man downtown.

The story does not mention the race of the boy or officer. Based on the location, there is a good chance the boy was black (25% black neighborhood - quite high by Seattle standards).
Just as in other cases - a black boy with a cell phone/wallet - may look as threatening to a white officer as a white boy with a gun.
On the other hand the kid is lucky he was not killed:
- What's a 13 yo doing out at 3am? (tagging buildings, apparently)
- Why did he run away from the police when ordered to stop.
- Why did he not put his hands up when ordered to do so (and instead pulled out his cell phone)???

The full text of the Andrew Meyer arrest. There is a lot of conflicting testimony by the offers here. The also omit what I found to be important information caught on video.
Apparently, before the video, Meyer had to shout to get Kerry's attention and get his questions answered. At that point, Kerry said he would answer, but the police made the determination that he was being a disturbance.
One of the officers says he made the determination that they were going to arrest Meyer because of his "overall demeanor".
Quoted: Before Senator Kerry could attempt to answer his first question/statement, Meyer advised there were two more
questions. I leaned over to Ofc. Mallo and we made the decision that Meyer would be escorted out of the auditorium after his statements/questions due to his overall demeanor and actions.I watched the video - and the officers did not give Meyer a chance to hear Kerry's response even after his mic was shut off. Why didn't they just let him stand there, and let Kerry either answer, or leave the auditorium. They give no justification for his arrest and removal from the auditorium; the even was over - so there was nothing more for him to "disrupt".
There is no mention that Meyer was shouting "Are you arresting me? What did I do?". One of the officers claim he was pushed my Meyer - I didn't see that - he was trying to get free but I saw no aggressive behavior against any of the officers - just defensive resistance.
The user feedback here is way off base in my opinion (including ra-ra cops who enjoy inflicting pain on those they arrest).
Here we have a scrawny 22 yo, and 6 cops can't manage to get him out of the auditorium w/o using a taser? Give me a break. And there's no way Meyer posed a threat to ANYONE in that room. Cops love their authority do not like it when people stand up to them.
