I really like the "autoruns" program to show you all the things that are booting on your machine at startup.
I've been really disgusted that so many programs are added to the boot process when you install software (or are even preloaded on a new machine).
Autoruns will show you all the programs that start when you boot your machine (see the Logon tag). I counted over 28(!) individual programs an mine. Most of these are NOT to the benefit of the USER, but rather serve the software vendor (by either spying on you, or allowing them to market to you).
I turned off 13 of these startup programs, and saved myself a few seconds of boot time.
One of my favorite features of autoruns is that you can right-click to Search Online to find more information about a particular *.exe program to see if it is virus/spyware/useless.
