This article reviews the Smart Car. While I am all for increased fuel efficiency, I'd feel too vulnerable in a car that small...especially on American roads. On top of that, the Prius gets comparable mileage and is *much* larger and more practical.
Also in this article, a promising stat:

We got a Prius a while back but have never been very impressed by the gas mileage -- stuck on 42. This weekend we finally got to 52!
+ warm weather
+ cranked tire pressure way up
+ hit 10,000 miles
+ slowed way down
