Do you come out ahead financially by purchasing a hybrid?
Quoted: But this quick analysis misses a number of hybrids' other economic benefits.
...
For starters, hybrids are holding their value better than non-hybrid cars. This means that, even if you don't recoup the extra cost of the hybrid in gas savings, you're likely to get more money out of the car when you decide to sell it.ShareViewed: 8 Times

Sounds very promising...
Quoted: AutoObserver reports that the next generation Prius will be four inches longer, get a more powerful 1.8 liter gas engine that when combined with electrics will do a total 160 horsepower (compared with 110hp in the current 1.5 liter setup). The kicker is that it'll be more fuel efficient, too. Using Japan's metrics for fuel economy, the current setup gets 84mpg, but the next gen has been reported to run 94 miles under the same conditions. The car is set to be unveiled in 2009.

This car is fully electric, has a 200 mile range while weighing 2600 pounds, and does 0-60 in 4 seconds. In this review, Jay Leno says it compares favorably to a Lotus Elise. The big downside is the price -- $98K.
Quoted: Tesla is quite smart in that it is reaching the enthusiasts of the market. If you like sports cars and you want to be green, this is the only way to go.

This article reviews the Smart Car. While I am all for increased fuel efficiency, I'd feel too vulnerable in a car that small...especially on American roads. On top of that, the Prius gets comparable mileage and is *much* larger and more practical.
Also in this article, a promising stat:
Quoted: In the automotive business these days, big is out and small is in. Sales of large sport-utility vehicles are down 45%. Small-car sales have increased 70%.
