Artist draws entire yearbook - Boing Boing

Quoted: Cartoonist John "RobotJohnny" Martz drew his mom's entire 1968 high school yearbook. That's more than 1,000 faces. Martz says, "Good cartooning, to me, is all about simplification, and this was a fun experiment in distilling each person’s likeness down to a simple cartoon version and learning to draw efficiently, with both speed and as few details as possible." He posted all of the pages at Flickr and also made a book of the project.

Nathan Sawaya: The Art of the Brick

This guy was just interviewed on The Big Idea.

He quit his job as a laywer to work at Legoland at $13/hour. Now, he's a freelancer and sells his LEGO art at a profit of $10,000 a piece.

Quoted: Some artists use paint, others bronze – But for Nathan Sawaya he chooses to build his awe-inspiring art out of toy building blocks. LEGO® bricks to be exact.

    Boing Boing: Strange Indian painting

It looked like the woman is about to hammer the guy...oh well.

Quoted: I am aware that the scene depicts blacksmithing. But the composition makes it look like the guy is about to get hammered.

    Vikram Chandra at SAAM

Just saw Vikram Chandra speak. Despite the fact that he used Microsoft Project (yes you read that correctly) to manage the story-line in his most recent book, I came away impressed.

While fiction, his most recent mystery book allows you experience Mumbai through the eyes of characters involved in the underworld, dance clubs, the police, politics, and bollywood.. It also presents the characters in a very unbiased way -- and it makes you realize that almost no one (even one of the worst gangsters in Bombay) is all evil.

Quoted: Co-presented with the SEATTLE ASIAN ART MUSEUM and the SOUTH ASIA CENTER at the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON. Probably no new literary work in the English-speaking world is being read, reviewed, and discussed more than Vikram Chandra's breathtakingly wide-ranging new novel, Sacred Games (HarperCollins).

    Alphonse Mucha Online

The bathroom wallpaper in my uncle's house used to be covered with works from Mucha. As a result, I'd spend a long time on the toilet! We're also looking at a Mucha work at B&O right now.

Quoted: Alphonse Mucha [Czech Art Nouveau Printmaker, 1860-1939] Guide to pictures of works by Alphonse Mucha in art museum sites and image archives worldwide.

Metroblogging Seattle: First Thursday Art Walk

Arguably, the best part of artwalk. Went to the Western Building for the first time yesterday.

Quoted: Western Building independent artists' studios and lofts, 619 Western Avenue in Pioneer Square. Maze through each floor of the enchantingly-craftsy Western Building and visit the works of independent artists in the shared studios and lofts space. I love the Western Building and everything in it! It's your quintessential artist's workspace? ethereally spacious, huge windows for natural lighting, high ceilings, old-fashioned freight elevator access and that creaky, lovingly-antiquated staircase.
