Interesting that Ford wants to sell a profitable business. Guess it doesn't fit into Ford's restructuring plans.
Quoted:While the PAG as a whole loses money – US$327 million last year on sales of US$30 billion – Volvo is understood to be profitable. Ford does not disclose separate figures for the Swedish group, but analysts have speculated that it made about US$500 million last year. Ford paid US$6.95 billion for Volvo in 1999, buying it from AB Volvo, the truck maker.

Good point, and it makes me feel safer driving my *relatively* smallish car.
Quoted: We feel that way because in the TrailBlazer our chances of surviving a collision with a hypothetical tractor-trailer in the other lane are greater than they are in the Porsche. What we forget, though, is that in the TrailBlazer you're also much more likely to hit the tractor-trailer because you can't get out of the way in time.

Not looking good for the U.S. automakers. What's especially troubling is that Toyota is starting to eat into the full size pickup market -- the last segment dominated by the Big Three.
Some of the latest offerings, especially from Ford (the Ford Fusion), are competitive. But, it might be too late to change perceptions.
Quoted: Over the first three months of the year, Ford's U.S. market share stood at 15.4 percent, behind GM's 22.9 percent and Toyota's 15.6 percent. DaimlerChrysler came in fourth at 13.8 percent and Honda placed fifth, at 9.1 percent.

In the pickup truck market -- the last niche dominated by U.S. automakers -- GM, Ford and Chrysler all saw sales fall.

ford needs to continue introducing models like the ford fusion/mercury milan (quite competitive) and/or invest more in hybrid technology in suv's.
Quoted: DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. dashed Wall Street's hopes for a profitable second quarter Thursday, blaming its dependence on high-margin SUVs for a $123 million loss as consumers shifted toward gas-sipping cars.
