Big Three get March U.S. sales beating, Toyota cheers - Yahoo! News

Not looking good for the U.S. automakers. What's especially troubling is that Toyota is starting to eat into the full size pickup market -- the last segment dominated by the Big Three.

Some of the latest offerings, especially from Ford (the Ford Fusion), are competitive. But, it might be too late to change perceptions.

Quoted: Over the first three months of the year, Ford's U.S. market share stood at 15.4 percent, behind GM's 22.9 percent and Toyota's 15.6 percent. DaimlerChrysler came in fourth at 13.8 percent and Honda placed fifth, at 9.1 percent.
    ...
In the pickup truck market -- the last niche dominated by U.S. automakers -- GM, Ford and Chrysler all saw sales fall.

GM in early talks to buy Chrysler: source - Yahoo! News

Quoted: Analysts questioned whether GM would benefit from an outright merger with Chrysler, since both automakers are struggling with excess production capacity, sliding sales and a heavy exposure to trucks and sport utility vehicles.

GM Builds Its First Hybrid Trucks - Gizmodo

Good to see GM rolling out hybrids. Will have to wait and see if there really is such an increase in fuel economy.

Quoted: Our beloved greasemonkey brethren at Jalopnik tell us the techo-goodness inside is called dual-mode hybrid, where GM and their buddies at BMW and DaimlerChrysler have figured out how to hook up two separate connections into the hybrid system and shoehorn all that into the standard-sized transmission case. One of those connections is for low-speed, high load-type operations, and another for high-speed, freeway-type, lighter load-type operations. Bottom line? 25% better fuel economy, and 365hp.

    Some good news for GM!

Quoted: In the storm of losses and layoffs at General Motors Corp. in the U.S., a different recent announcement drew little notice: For the first time, GM has overtaken Volkswagen as the No. 1 automaker in China.
