Quoted: Because the Rainiers have unexpectedly stormed back into the Pacific Coast League pennant race, and having Silva pitch might "jeopardize" their chances, in the words of TNT's Larry LaRue. Yes, a pitcher who'll make $11 million this year (and $11.5 million both next year and the year after) can't be trusted against the Salt Lake Bees.

Great start to the season.
Quoted: Ken Griffey Jr. got off to a great second start with the Seattle Mariners, hitting an opening-night home run to back Felix Hernandez in a 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday. Hernandez pitched eight innings and Franklin Gutierrez had a two-run homer against Francisco Liriano (0-1) as the Mariners -- with five new faces in their lineup -- took the first step toward forgetting the futility... - Major League Baseball news

RRS defends Ichiro.
Quoted: But I will take a moment to address the disturbing article because I do think its important to make this clear from a player’s point of view:
..
Ichiro is very very respected in the clubhouse, yes as a player but most of all as a teammate. He is a class act, a true professional, and has so much respect for the game of baseball.

Nice to see the emergence of RRS this season and his optimism for next season.
Quoted: I know it sucks that we haven’t done well this year. It’s been tough for everyone. Ignore the negativity you read! There are some great guys in this locker room and we’re gonna have a youth revolution and be strong next year!

This is one of a number of (oddly) intelligent moves the Mariners have made in the past week.
Quoted: The Jose Vidro era ended today when the Mariners designated him for assingment. I just drove by him in the Safeco Field parking lot. I was headed in, he was leaving. The Mariners have 10 days to release, trade or demote Vidro to the minors -- a move he could refuse. Anyhow, he's gone

Very unusual for a pitcher (especially an AL pitcher) to hit a home run. Felix not only hit a home run, but did so with the bases loaded and against one of the best pitchers in baseball.
Quoted: As Jack Buck would say, I cannot believe what I just saw. Felix crushed the first pitch he saw from Johan Santana for a, for a, for a....grand slam. It was the first home run ever hit by a Mariners pitcher.

The carnage continues.
Quoted: As Dave noted earlier, the reason to keep McLaren around would be to let an incoming GM pick their own candidate: if Riggleman does better the rest of the season, which should happen, then the thought is it’s harder to fire him. I’m not sure that’ll deter whoever takes over, of course.

Very cool story about a Terp great. Liz, you'll have to forward it to Penelope ; )
1 FaverViewed: 3 TimesQuoted: Later, looking at the collection, he said: “Not often, but on occasion I feel guilty. I have all this because I run real fast and I tackle people. I recognize why I’ve been able to do this. It’s not all because of me or my family or my teammates or my coaches. It’s more because of the faces on the walls in my basement.”
