Game Design Essentials: 20 Difficult Games

This is a sure-to-be-interesting essay on Gamasutra about what those truly difficult games from yesteryear can teach us about game design, and how difficulty in videogames has changed over the years.

It's a long one, but a great topic.

Top 20 Games of the Last Generation

I haven't even looked at this whole list, but I already know it's going to be a keeper.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that I will both have heard of all of these games, and maybe even played half of them.

30 Things You Didn't Know You Could Do on the Internet

"The Web is learning new tricks every day. These surprising sites and services will help you solve problems and save time--and one might even make you a star."

This is a nice article put together by someone at PCWorld magazine, about some of the lesser known things you can do on the internet.

There are some great things here, many of which I'm familiar with, others less so.

One man's take on student use of Wikipedia.

Some good guidelines to follow for sure.

An interesting list from The Observer discussing the 50 albums that changed music.

Number 1? The Velvet Underground. Can't say I've listened to that one all the way through, but it must be good.

Guide to Useless Services (Windows XP SP2)

"In this guide, we'll tell you which default Windows XP SP2 services are not required and can be turned off for performance without any problems."

This is a pretty extensive guide on supposedly useless Windows services, which I don't doubt there are a lot of.

This is a great article on how to get about your computer and the internet without your mouse.

Looks like there's some good tips and software to be found here.

The 20 Most Important Tools Ever

"A look at the devices that have helped shape the course of human history."

Oddly enough this came from Forbes, but it's a really interesting look at just that: the 20 most important tools ever.

I don't believe they're in any order, but my vote for number one would probably be the pencil.

    Supersize Your RSS

This is nice little article on Wired about RSS and how its potential will only grow when Vista hits shelves January 30th.

It includes a few tips/tricks to get even more out of RSS.

One that I want to look into is the "Merge Right" section, about FeedShake and consolidating feeds into one larger feed.

    Will Wright: Dream Machines

Will Wright is most certainly on the short list of great game developers.

He also happens to be damn smart; I mean, he's the guy behind all things Sim(s), and his next game Spore looks *awesome*.

This essay of his for Wired Magazine discusses "how games are unleashing the human imagination." Great stuff.
