Who Says Kids Make You Happy? | Newsweek Global Literacy | Newsweek.com

Interesting -- and not at all surprising.

Quoted: In Daniel Gilbert's 2006 book "Stumbling on Happiness," the Harvard professor of psychology looks at several studies and concludes that marital satisfaction decreases dramatically after the birth of the first child—and increases only when the last child has left home. He also ascertains that parents are happier grocery shopping and even sleeping than spending time with their kids. Other data cited by 2008's "Gross National Happiness" author, Arthur C. Brooks, finds that parents are about 7 percentage points less likely to report being happy than the childless.

I'm so glad we don't buy mass-produced meat. Yuck.

Quoted: Last week, the Seattle P-I's "Secret Ingredients" blog disclosed that Tara Smith, an assistant professor at the University of Iowa Department of Epidemiology, and her graduate researchers found MRSA in more than 70 percent of the pigs they tested on farms in Iowa and Illinois.

CNN Political Ticker: Biden calls Bush comments 'bullshit'

Go Biden! I wish more Dems would be this blunt about the Bush administration.

Quoted: The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Joe Biden, D-Delaware, called President Bush’s comments accusing Sen. Barack Obama and other Democrats of wanting to appease terrorists "bullshit" ... "[Bush] is the guy who’s weakened us. He’s the guy that’s increased the number of terrorists in the world. His policies have produced this vulnerability the United States has. His intelligence community pointed that out not me."

I always find it incredibly phony (if not devisive) when cadidates say "God bless America." That's something that you'd only genuinely say if you were moderately to very religious, which most of the candidates never are. I think they always think they have to say it to seem like "they got religion too," which is dumb.

Quoted: At the beginning of 2007 there were 38 things candidates could mention in public that wouldn't be considered damaging to their campaigns, but now they are mostly limited to 'Thank you all for coming,' and 'God bless America,'" ...

Former Senator Lincoln Chafee's chilling account of the early days of the Cheney administration.

Quoted: And then, in a moment I can only describe as infuriating, Senator Specter took no leadership role in representing the moderate point of view. He acquiesced, and others followed his example.

Spain's Pregnant Defense Minister - TIME

At least some countries get it.

Quoted: By now, no one should be surprised by Zapatero's commitment to gender equality. In his first term, he passed a sweeping law against domestic violence, legalized gay marriage, eased divorce laws, and required political parties to practice gender parity. He also appointed equal numbers of men and women to cabinet positions, and named María Teresa Fernández de la Vega as his deputy prime minister.
This time around, the prime minister, who was re-elected on March 9, appointed more women than men to his cabinet. He also created a new Equality Ministry, charged with ensuring fairness in the workplace and continuing the fight against domestic violence.
