click to playI'm asking for a raise today to go with my promotion from contractor to vendor, so Donna Summer has my back today. I just love the group dance scene in the street. Can you spot the Microsoft vendor? (Hint: It's the very sexy one!)

Good news.
Quoted: On a Tuesday evening in early summer, a very pregnant Lindsay Androski Kelly walked in her door to exuberant shouts of "Mommy! Mommy!" from her 2-year-old son, George. She dropped her laptop in her home office and listened to the boy tell her about his adventures on the playground.

I'm not sure how I feel about this article. I'm not sure the author does either. It supports my theory that more women are not in positions of power at work because of the baby factor and how unwilling businesses are to accomodate it. But I'm not sure why she thinks higher female enrollment in college will equal more women in power down the road. I think more women are going to college because it's become expected of them. Doesn't mean they won't drop out of work to have kids a couple years after graduation. It will be interesting to see if any of this changes as Boomers retire and vacancies for skilled professionals grows.

Why haven't employers adjusted to women in the workplace? 30 years was not enough time? The US, or at least the powers that be, seem tremendously sexist on this issue, given the advancements that other modernized countries have successfully employed. One of my main hopes for the next administration is to turn this around and take a lesson from countries like Sweden and France, where it is much easier for mothers to choose full time work over part time or staying at home. My one comfort in this survey is that working moms seem to be becoming more resolute that full time work is the best choice.
Quoted: The 29-year-old can't work part-time and says most employers simply haven't adjusted to women in the workplace.

I think this article has a lot of truth in it. It does seem unlikely that a board is sitting somewhere just deciding to pay women less. Women are too accomodating and self-sacrificial all the way around. You only need to watch the different ways men and women behave on the bus to see it. Men don't feel bad about taking up space--women cram themselves against the wall to accomodate. Part of the problem is not teaching girls the value of assertiveness. Then again, "assertiveness" in women is often tantamount to being a bitch.
Quoted: Could it be that women are partly to blame for the persistent pay gap between males and females in the work force? Some women think so, perhaps because money is often treated as a taboo subject. Your Career by Eve Tahmincioglu.

This article really hits the nail on the head! (Also, that's a great illustration). Apparently the writer authored a novel called "The Abstinence Teacher" - seems worth checking out.
