Really good video showing the landing sequence for today's Mars landing. Of special interest, the parachute only slows the landing vehicle down to 120 mph. So, 30 seconds from landing, it releases from the parachute, and then lands under the control of pulse rockets that slow it down to a 5 mph descent rate.

Quoted: Phoenix Mission: A new space explorer is waiting in the wings and ready to take center stage: the Mars lander called Phoenix. Set for launch aboard a Delta II rocket, Phoenix's assignment is to dig through the Martian soil and ice in the arctic region and use its onboard scientific instruments to analyze the samples it retrieves.
