Quoted: While news reports from the frontlines remain preliminary and incomplete, the scale and speed of Russia’s military operations in Georgia between August 8 and 12 do shed some light on Russian military capabilities and operational readiness and raise new questions regarding the events leading to the conflict.

You must be Ross's friend before you can comment on this Fave."the evidently high state of readiness of such a broad array of Russian military units across all three services raises more questions about Moscow’s intentions and planning prior to the outbreak of hostilities."
Russia also now exercising classic pre-negotiation strategy. As they now occupy significant and important pieces of "undisputed" Georgia the negotiation shifts from being about their withdrawal from South Ossetia to being about their withdrawal from Georgia.
Yes, it seems clear that Russia has had its eye on Georgia. It is not surprising that Russia would act to show control of its borders (and neighbors). Yes, Georgia gave them a very convenient, grossly miscalculated opening. Remember, Georgia also wants to join NATO. The U.S. has been pushing Georgia's induction - not so the Europeans. I doubt that Russia will allow Georgia to join NATO. Low and behold Georgia just got a big slap-down. Would we let Mexico join a defense alliance with Russia? I seriously doubt it. Remember, the 19th and 20th centuries saw major invasions of Russia. And now we want to install missile batteries in Poland. Let's not forget the grossly miscalculated invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein. Saddam did not expect a strong response. Instead he was met with a full-blown U.S. operation to repel the Iraqis. Interestingly, Kuwait's border was drawn by the British, but historically the region invaded was part of Iraq. And so it goes...with might makes right winning out :)
The great game!
