Apple uncovers Sydney store for the first time: News - Hardware - ZDNet Australia

"Apple's first official store in the southern hemisphere is coming to Sydney, with a giant banner announcing the store uncovered on George Street today. Apple said that the store, located on the corner of George Street between King and Market Streets, cost over AU$23 million to build, and there have been rumours the store is modelled on Apple's flagship store on New York's Fifth Avenue."

Why does Sydney always get the cool things first? Grrr... You'd think someone as cool as Apple would know Melbourne's the cooler than Sydney :)

We’ll be giving away limited-edition T-shirts to the first 2,500 customers... Come early and be among the first in Australia to experience the Apple Retail Store, Sydney — located on George Street in the heart of downtown."

A t-shirt? Come on, you can do better than that Apple... oh, maybe not after the iPhone margins were slashed :)

"Apple today confirmed that its first official store in the southern hemisphere will open in Sydney... the council has granted permission to construction firm Kell & Rigby for a full road closure of George Street between King and Market Streets, for various evenings in January and February. It's thought the road closure will be necessary for the construction of Apple's store... The Sydney store will be styled on Apple's famous Fifth Avenue outlet in New York, and will cost over AU$23 million to build."

    Sydney again! Arrgh!

"There's an interesting article in The Economist at the moment praising Apple as the most innovative big company in the world. I think there's a lot Australia could learn from looking at Apple, in particular its willingness to fail in the pursuit of innovation...Even more, Apple was once written off as a "could have been" much as Australia is now. But with bold vision and a willingness to risk, it's now back at the top of its game...Where's our Steve Jobs? Why does it seem almost laughable to suggest such a company could ever be Australian?"

Why Are Macs So Expensive In Australia?

"I’ve been looking into the potential of switch to a Mac over the last couple of days, what I don’t get is this...Using xe.com (conversion rate of 83c), the same Mac sold in the US is $3,002 AUD. So why does Apple sell it for $3,999, 33% higher? even if we allow for 10% GST it still only brings it to $3,300, not $4k."

I'd love to know too, damn Apple exploiting us. And don't even start on blaming it on 'transport costs'.
