"You probably won't see this story in much of the trade press, but one of the quiet achievers of the Australian corner of the Internet has just had what sounds like a very satisfactory and lucrative exit. Knapp Communications, based in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Surry Hills, has sold the bicycle news Web site cyclingnews.com to UK-based Future Publishing for £2.2 million (A$5.2 million, US$4.4 million)."

    Wow, very impressive.

The Business of Blogging | Dipping into the Blogpond

"Is your Australian blog a hobby or a business? Should you register a business name? Should you apply for an ABN, or register for GST?"

Pretty nice summary by Meg on handling the business side of things in Australia not only for blogs, but also for small businesses in general.

    Flog your stuff with Flogd.com

"I got an email a few weeks back from Phillip Kingston, who together with Edward Thomson, have launched a self funded, beta service called Flogd. Both are 4th year students at the University of Melbourne. The basic idea behind flogd is that you can very easily integrate your own shop on your blog, myspace or facebook profile (yes, there’s a Facebook app). I imagine there would certainly be a large market of niche blogs out there who would have relevant products to flog."

Interesting idea, and all done using paypal so minimal setup costs to them, but revenue flows from commission. Good luck guys! Meanwhile, I should get a Facebook account...

Pacific Fox - The new POWER in Aussie Directories (NOT)

"The scenario goes something a little like this. You have a website with a LOT of data, business listings to be precise - and over 1.3 million of them...When checking your website statistics one day, you notice an IP address accessing a LOT of pages and sucking a lot of bandwidth...You recognise the offending IP as a business who has a premium listing on your business directory...you do a bit of digging, and voila! here it is...perhaps they should declare the fact that they simply plagiarise the hard work of others."

Wow, sounds like plagiarism caught red-handed. Go get 'em!

Better than Google? Creator thinks so - Technology - brisbanetimes.com.au

"Google is keeping a close eye on a small, suburban Melbourne start-up that claims to be developing a search engine that improves on the world leader...MyLiveSearch is fundamentally different...The search terms are put through Google, or other indexed search databases, but those results are treated as "starting points" alongside the user's bookmarks and other popular web hubs."

Hey, a Melburnian getting a chance of making it big! Good luck, but I hope there's more to it that what's online now, and next time, hire a graphics designer :)

The Age Blogs: Start Up Stories

"When you look at the people you are reporting in your line of management and can't find anyone who inspires you, anyone who you would want to be your mentor, when your manager tells you that you are "too passionate about your work", then you know it's time to move on. Know that feeling? I know you do."

Awesome article by Cam Reilly over at The Age's new Start Up Stories blog. Long, but good read - the comments are interesting too.

"My favourite definition of entrepreneurship is the one when an entrepreneur is asked after "completing" his or her business (typically a 5-8 year process for the startup/early stage) "Knowing what you now know, would you start a business again ?" : To which the entrepreneur laughs and says "No F'n Way !" Although their body language and continual talking about business opportunities would suggest otherwise ;) "

Haven't checked out the mag article, but barren's summarised it nicely - good read.

    Tangler's in public beta mode!

Tangler's essentially the new, cooler Google or Yahoo Groups, i.e. a discussion network. Slick interface, simple to use and as bad as it is for my productivity, the desktop notifier's awesome. Check out the short demo video.

Congrats guys for FINALLY ending the tease you guys have done so well in the last few months :P
