I’m not trying to disparage the open web. I think if the open web could move at the speed of a private company, we’d all be better off."
The standards vs. proprietary debate has popped up again (see the linked post as well). I think they're complementary really, another tool in the toolbox. It would be interesting to see the adoption rates of languages other than Javascript in Silverlight. I wonder why no one just creates an IE plugin to cater for its shortcomings - is that possible?

"Adobe Flex Builder 3 Pro is available for free to students and faculty of eligible education institutions."
Although Flex 3 is open source, there isn't a decent IDE out there for it apart from Adobe's commercial Flex Builder 3. Luckily, they've made it free for students here - just fill in the form and attach a scanned copy of your student card. Only takes a day or two to get the key. Pretty neat stuff.

"...Adobe gave a sneak peek of a new application being developed by the company code-named "Thermo." Thermo is what they're terming a "rich internet application design tool."... Thermo has basic drawing tools that can be used to wireframe an app, but what really makes Thermo special for designers is that it understands Photoshop images and uses layer data to capture information about various UI elements..."
Check it out - pretty cool stuff, given using Photoshop to mock up websites is a fairly universal thing among web designers. Pity they couldn't do this for HTML/JS/CSS too.
samuel337 | Shared With: Everyone - Apr 26 2007 | open source, adobe, programming"Adobe is announcing plans to open source Flex under the Mozilla Public License (MPL). This includes not only the source to the ActionScript components from the Flex SDK, which have been available in source code form with the SDK since Flex 2 was released, but also includes the Java source code for the ActionScript and MXML compilers, the ActionScript debugger and the core ActionScript libraries from the SDK. "
Oooh, Adobe sure is doing a lot more to garner the attention and love of open-source fans. Although in reality, it won't mean much for most people, it's another nail in the ideological battle for Microsoft.
It lacks a decent free IDE though. If only Flex Builder was free, or an Express version was created...
