That electronic gatekeeper is a bearded, 42-year-old bachelor, Robert Elz , a computer systems administrator at Melbourne University. He holds the sole right to dispense the crucial "domain names" which allow companies to hang out their shingle on the Internet... Elz spends his nights and weekends - without pay - considering the applications of companies who might be investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in an Internet presence."
Wow, never knew unimelb played such a big role in getting the Internet here, and that the domain name situation was like that at the beginning. Very interesting.

"Skitch the new image editing/sharing tool from Plasq got a write up on TechCrunch today. Plasq is founded by Aussie CEO Cris Pearson who is based in Melbourne, they previously developed ComicLife which is a popular photo-comic-app for Mac."
Pretty neat utility, only because it blows away the traditional boundaries between apps. Melbourne made too, nice stuff.

"Google is keeping a close eye on a small, suburban Melbourne start-up that claims to be developing a search engine that improves on the world leader...MyLiveSearch is fundamentally different...The search terms are put through Google, or other indexed search databases, but those results are treated as "starting points" alongside the user's bookmarks and other popular web hubs."
Hey, a Melburnian getting a chance of making it big! Good luck, but I hope there's more to it that what's online now, and next time, hire a graphics designer :)

How awesome is Skydeck 88 at Melbourne's Eureka Tower? Especially The Edge, which is where you stand in an opaque glass enclosure, which then moves out from the building, before the glass turns transparent, with sound effects.
Would you have the guts to jump in the glass enclosure when its transparent and jutting out from the building?
It's harder than you think - I tried something similar at the Macau Tower, where they have a glass floor.
