samuel337 | Shared With: Everyone - Dec 08 2007 | xbox 360"As some might know, there’s going to be an Xbox 360 dashboard updated on Dec 4... Heaps of cool stuff coming out in it such as; download to own Xbox originals games (read Xbox 1), cheaper XBLA games, better integration with Xbox.com (friends and news), and improved codec support... The Xbox 360 supports files encoded using MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple and Advanced Simple Profile. These files are often referred to as Xvid or DivX® video files."
Just tested it - I can play divx/xvid files on my 360 now (after installing the Dec 4 Update and Optional Media Update - it'll prompt for it)! Good to see Microsoft listening to its customers, even if it takes a while to get through.

"There are games where you have to watch the high definition trailer to appreciate, and there’s the game where you know it’s a winner just by reading the back-story. You drive cars (and motorbikes), “Project Gotham Racing 4“, is the former. The war comes home, “World In Conflict“, is the latter...I’m running the game on medium graphics setting for smoother gameplay and it is still absolutely gorgeous to look at, can’t imagine what “Very High” and a DirectX 10 graphics card could do."
Wow, if I ever get into serious gaming again, that's what I'd be playing. Looks bloody awesome!

"As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced (3-year) warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles... If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge—including shipping—for three years from the console’s purchase date."
About bloody time; at least they did I suppose. Cost is estimated to be 1 billion bucks apparently, ouch. More here:

"As part of our commitment to our members, we do not allow people that we have detected to have modified their console to connect to LIVE...As a result, some consumers that try to login to LIVE who we detect have illegally modified their console will get an error code (Status Code: Z: 8015 - 190D) when trying to connect to the service."
Good move, whatever the reason is. Just hope they don't 'accidentally' lock out innocent parties. And what if someone sells their locked 360 to someone else? Are they left with a dud machine? I love the 'I'll get a PS3' comments - do you really think 'rootkit-loving' Sony won't do something like this?

"Peter Moore of Microsoft has gone on record by saying that the Xbox 360 could also join the project...He even went so far as to cast doubt regarding the value of the 250,000 currently registered PS3's on the program, saying that "we'll continue to look at this and see whether there's real value." We're forced to ask: how is this kind of attitude in aid of the project? By reducing something as noble as the Folding@home project to a PR battle, Moore's indication sounds bitter and petty."
Whoops, someone's been reading the PR/shareholder material too much.

Wow, the 360 gains Messenger abilities and a QWERTY keyboard attachment in Spring (Autumn for Aussies) update, coming out May 9th.
I've always found it difficult to type messages on the 360 using the on-screen keyboard. This should be quite interesting, and much easier than the messenger capabilities in MCE as it didn't have the keyboard (unless you had a wireless one, which just looks out of place).
