An interesting perspective on recent history: industrialization created free time (unused mental capacity or "cognitive surplus"), TV filled it at first but now we are finding more constructive ways to apply it.

Quoted: I started telling [a TV producer] about the Wikipedia article on Pluto...She heard this story and she shook her head and said, "Where do people find the time?" That was her question. And I just kind of snapped. And I said, "No one who works in TV gets to ask that question. You know where the time comes from. It comes from the cognitive surplus you've been masking for 50 years."

Online Shopping Tips and Tricks ~ Chris Pirillo

We got another jump of traffic last night when Chris mentioned us on his blog. He talks about us in the video too.

In the mid-90s I used to subscribe to Chris's Lockergnome email newsletter, where he covered the latest shareware and freeware for Windows. Back then we both lived in Des Moines, Iowa. Now he has a popular blog and organizes the Gnomedex conference here in Seattle.

Quoted: I did a lot of research into finding the best price, and came across a website I wanted you to know about.

Quoted: On ClayValet, you can submit up to five free requests per week. ClayValet is a personal shopping service. They can give advice, find you deals, and recommend the best products. Simply tell them what you’re looking for, and they’ll do the work for you.

A surprisingly entertaining, self-deprecating speech that makes the president look like a human being.

    Joey Skaggs

Multimedia artist whose specialty is pulling pranks on the mass media

Quoted: Internationally notorious artist Joey Skaggs is a satirist, prankster, media critic, and social activist. Since the sixties, he has duped the world press with outrageous fabricated news stories highlighting disinformation, hype, hypocrisy, social injustice and the misuse of power. Skaggs purposefully challenges people to consider their core beliefs, how they came to them, if they ever question them, and if not, why not. He has now created an actual product befitting his work. It's the Universal Bullshit Detector Watch -- a wristwatch that also flashes, moos and poops, allowing the wearer to make social commentary with humor. Available at www.bswatch.com.
