this could be good or it could SUCK.
at least it's not Jerry Bruckheimer directing....

Quoted: Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (PRISONER OF THE MOUNTAINS) illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in his stunning historical epic, MONGOL. Based on leading scholarly accounts and written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, MONGOL delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162. As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. MONGOL shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor.

    holy fucking shizz.

one of the most incendiary music videos i've ever seen.

unless i missed some sort of immanent critique or satire going on (which i kind of doubt), this is basically a big name french group giving a big "fuck you in the eye" to French life, and in the name of the youth of the banlieu.

certainly, the comparison to Clockwork Orange mentioned several times by French and American people in the comments section is warranted.

i'm interested in people's opinions of this. did you like it? what did you think of the portrayal of violence?
is this akin to riot porn, albeit without the insidious "progressive agenda" that is used to legitimate the fetishism of it?
or is this a valid political message?

Shaviro has a great review of G Romero's new Zombie flick, "Diary of the Dead"....

one awesome passage from his review:

"Such is the antinomy on which the film ends, and I think that it is a profound one. We have moved from being a “society of the spectacle” to being a society of participatory and interactive media. And Diary of the Dead is thinking about this change — not to say that the new media regime is either better or worse than what came before, but to try to delineate just how it is different. The great unitary spectacle of which Guy Debord wrote has been shattered, and replaced by new forms of distraction and activity in what Deleuze called the “society of control.” We are no longer passive, voyeuristic spectators; instead, we actively both give ourselves over to surveillance, and eagerly surveil (is that a word?) both others and ourselves. We fragment, multiply, and network both ourselves and whatever we encounter. This no longer falls under the dipolar schema of subject and object; but rather has the form of a network in which everyone and everything is a node. This also means that we have moved on from representation to simulation: instead of trying to capture the Real via mimesis, we actively produce bits and pieces of a reality that is directly composed of images, rather than merely being captured or reflected in images. The regime of simulacra is not an “extermination of the real” as Baudrillard claimed; it is rather a state in which the real is effectively being micro-produced and virally disseminated. In consequence, the real and the imaginary have become, as Deleuze puts it, “indiscernible”: reality pushes toward a “point of indiscernibility,” as a result of “the coalescence of the actual image and the virtual image, the image with two sides, actual and virtual at the same time” (Deleuze, Cinema 2, p. 69). Every imaginary simulation becomes altogether real, even as every reality is dissolved in simulacral multiplication."

    Nealist:
i forgot to tell you last time we spoke....this is the new bar you can expect to spend many a chill night at...

here's a short list of its perks:
    1. no tvs
    2. chill ambiance, with great jazz music
    3. amazing beer bottle selection, featuring a bunch of rogue and quebec beers, belgians, craft brews, etc.
    4. back patio with tables and chairs, to drink AND smoke simultaneously
    5. it's right down the street from our house (like a 2 min bike ride, i'm not kidding)
    6. the most important thing about it: THEY HAVE SHUFFLEBOARD.....inside....the....bar.....AMAZING!!!

so, just FYI: I'll be challenging yer ass to some shuffleboard matches when you hop back across the big puddle.

another story about the girl who got struck and killed on her bike last week around the corner from me.

mainly dotting so i can copy this info from the Chifg forumz:

There will be a visitation for Mandy Annis on Tuesday 6. May at 7:30
P.M. at Cavalry Memorial Church, 931 Lake Street.

All members of the cycling community who wish to pay their respects are
    welcome.

Those who wish to ride together to the visitation from the city, gather
at 6:00 PM to leave by 6:30 in front of the Handlebar, 2311 W. North Ave.

    this part is just brutal:
Quoted: James Bausch was picking up an engagement ring for his girlfriend, Amanda "Mandy" Annis, the last time he spoke to her.
