New Statesman - Review of Zizek's new book, "Violence"

review of zizek's new book, "violence".

warning: the author of the review makes some very irritating remarks throughout this piece.

    example:

"In this respect, this wave of contemporary
thinkers is a vast improvement on theorists of the previous generation such as Gilles Deleuze, whose pious ultra-leftism manifested itself in dense works that had nothing whatsoever to do with the real practice of politics."

that's silly and unnecessary. and simply wrong. why throw crap like this into your writing? it just embarrasses the one who wrote it. the theme of political organization and resistance is written so obviously all over the entirety of Mille Plateaux (to mention only one larger work) that to act like it's not there is simply to pointlessly repeat the reductive and reactionary gesture that so much of the recent commentary has made on this subject, and deliberately avoids a direct confrontation with the serious questions D & G pose.

anyway, this irritated me. obviously, it's not central to the argument of this piece. [edit: on second thought, it secretly might be...]
    carry on.

so what is central to the argument.

you can read it. i'm trying to forget it.

in hindsight, there's a way (given my next dot) in which that offhand jab at deleuze does creep insidiously to the heart of his argument. anyway, i'm getting a shower and moving on with my day.

why read/post if its crap? is it *worth* reading? if its simply more zizek-influenced anti-deleuze rants à la 'organs w/o bodies'.. meh. that whole book is a fairly worthless attempt to hate on guattari and assimilate deleuze into lacan.
