another story about the girl who got struck and killed on her bike last week around the corner from me.

mainly dotting so i can copy this info from the Chifg forumz:

There will be a visitation for Mandy Annis on Tuesday 6. May at 7:30
P.M. at Cavalry Memorial Church, 931 Lake Street.

All members of the cycling community who wish to pay their respects are
    welcome.

Those who wish to ride together to the visitation from the city, gather
at 6:00 PM to leave by 6:30 in front of the Handlebar, 2311 W. North Ave.

    this part is just brutal:
Quoted: James Bausch was picking up an engagement ring for his girlfriend, Amanda "Mandy" Annis, the last time he spoke to her.

i think someone already posted that info, but indeed, it's a fucking screenplay-like tragedy. some reports say that she was wearing the helmet (and if it was found on the scene, i don't know why she would have a helmet with her and not be wearing it). and the redeye also reported that she may have had the green as she crossed the intersection.

      its fucked.
i'm debating about blowing off Bill's class on the pretense of attending the service. think he'd understand? he's a cyclist, right?

yeah, i'm sure he would...fuck, i blew off his class once last year just to see deer hunter

    Looptopia '08 Chicago's All-Night Cultural Celebration, May 2, 2008

    anyone else going to this?

    quoted:
    It's all for you, Chicago!

Looptopia, the nation's first dusk until dawn artistic celebration, transforms and illuminates the Loop. Inspired by "White Night" events in cities like Rome, Paris and Madrid, Looptopia made its wildly successful debut as the first American event of its kind last year.

Looptopia turns the city on its head Friday, May 2 as the Loop is transformed into a sensory playground celebrating arts, culture, architecture and insomniacs alike. This all night extravaganza paints the Loop as an urban wonderland - it's ethereal & it's all Chicago. 300 artists. 100 venues. 14 hours. More than 100,000 people. A night you'll never forget.

Urban adventurers. City Dwellers. Night Owls. Students. Couples. Families. Music Fans. Circus lovers. There is truly something for everyone at Looptopia.

It's an all night celebration of the arts and the Loop. And it's all for you, Chicago.

    Bike 2015 : Executive Summary

this is how chicago MIGHT just become one of the most bike-awesome cities in the country in the next 5 years...or 7 years...okay let's face it...some day long in the future.
but hey, at least they're trying.

i was surprised by the emphasis on bike messengers too.

The Immortal Class: Bike Messengers and the Cult of Human Power by Travis Culley

anyone read this, or know anything about it?

Quoted: Amazon.com: The Immortal Class: Bike Messengers and the Cult of Human Power: Travis Culley

    "From Publishers Weekly
Puck, the scabby roommate from MTV's The Real World, remains the archetypal bike messenger: hyperkinetic, crass, hygienically challenged. But as Culley demonstrates in this exciting memoir of his years spent on two wheels, there's much more to the world of bike messengers than the stereotype. Many are artists, writers or revolutionariesACulley himself is all three. He got his start as a messenger in Chicago in the late 1990s by answering an ad in the newspaper after his small theater company went belly up. "The below-freezing winds burned my wrists and forearms," Culley says. "Thick bloodless cuts would open up along the lines of my fingerprints." He persevered and soon became (by his own description, at least) the fastest, best bike messenger in the city. Culley evokes the dangers of his profession, from careening taxis to yuppie road rage and broken bones. But there were also rewards, principally freedom from the cubicles of the corporate "wage slave." Culley's book is not just a memoir; it's also a political tract about the evils of the consumer economy and car-based capitalism. "The bicycle is a revolution," Culley says, "and I am using it like a hammer to change the world." Such statements may seem to many to veer toward the lunatic fringe, but to the bike messengers living on the edge of the system and constantly in danger from four-wheeled competitors, they'll make considerable sense. Offering a rare inside view of a maligned but ubiquitous urban subculture, this kinetic memoirAwhich is supported by a four-city author tour and ads in alternative weeklies"
