Quoted: Ireland announced yesterday that the state would safeguard all deposits, bonds and debts in six banks and building societies for two years following a huge share sell-off on Monday.
The €400bn package covers Allied Irish, Bank of Ireland, Anglo Irish Bank, Irish Life and Permanent, Irish Nationwide Building Society, and the Educational Building Society. British depositors with accounts in their UK branches will be covered, as will savers at the UK's Post Office whose deposits are run by Bank of Ireland.

I've been wanting to bill the settlers of Chicagoland area for my winter frost trauma too. now i have historical precedent. nice!"Friedrich Schiller received a notice from Germany's GEZ at an address in the town of Weigsdorf-Köblitz in the eastern state of Saxony, telling him if he did not pay the monthly €17.03 for using his radio and television sets legal proceedings would be launched against him.
A spokeswoman for the GEZ issued an apology, admitting that the poet, who died in 1805 and is best known for his poem Ode to Joy which was set to music by Beethoven in his ninth symphony, was registered with the organisation as "Herr Friedrich Schiller", a household owner in possession of a radio and television set. I'm downloading this now through Pirate Bay. Arcand's recent films (esp Barbarian Invasions) are great. I really want to see Réjeanne Padovani too, SOOO if anyone has a link to where i can find it, i'd be obliged. the torrent is dead on Karagarga.
thanks.
"Denys Arcand’s extraordinary fatalistic dirge on life in Quebec might well have been subtitled “victimization as the inevitable condition of society.” Less overtly political than Réjeanne Padovani (1973), though equally about powerlessness, Gina draws ironic parallels between the documentary and fiction modes and between various kinds of alienation, defeat and submissiveness. An incisive indictment of class divisions in Quebec society, it speaks of humanity’s shared servitude, and offers no hope of a political solution. Gina has been aptly called “the most underrated of Arcand’s films” by NOW magazine film critic John Harkness, but also marked a turning point in Arcand’s career – he turned away from personal fiction films for the next ten years. The film’s spectacular violent denouement, which might seem reminiscent of the work of Sam Peckinpah, reflects Arcand’s view that violence is inevitable in a senselessly brutal society."
