Can Amazon save the e-book? - Slate Magazine

The author of this article tested out the new Kindle e-book reader and found that while there are still giltches to be worked out, this is the first e-reader that's "good enough to criticize."

Quoted: Amazon.com unveiled its Kindle e-book reader last week with a PR extravaganza that might impress even Steve Jobs.

I've been downloading e-books to my Palm for years and love it. It's not perhaps the best format, but I always have my Palm with me and I don't have to l;ug around another piece of equipment.

yeah, the idea of carrying around yet another gadget doesn't really appeal to me. do you find reading from the screen at all straining on your eyes?

    • sung - Nov 28 2007

i've always been under the impression that people disliked reading from the screen - wondering if this has changed over the years due to the internet and higher penetration of the personal computer.

      No I still hate it.

yeah, me too. my eyes get so dry & strained after editing on screen all day. i much prefer printing things out if i'm going to do a lot of reading.

A great Slate piece on why you don't find technology (computers, cell phones, etc.) in children's books.

Quoted: Technology, as we well know, has become a ubiquitous part of American children's lives. And yet there is one place—a whole world, actually—where children are safely walled off from wired and wireless devices. That is the world of picture books.

My friend Talia was the lead editor on this book about Web 2.0 that just got a fabulous review from one of the toughest book critics in the country!!! I'm not just saying it because she's my friend - this is an important book AND it's an interesting read!

Quoted: Andrew Keen points out in his provocative new book that Web 2.0, which incorporates user-generated content, social networking and interactive sharing, has a dark side.

Trying Again To Make Books Obsolete - New York Times

The Sony Reader actually seems really well designed - my prediction is the problem will end up being the price ($350). A high price to pay when you can just go to the library for free.

Quoted: The new Sony Reader distinguishes itself from all the other failed e-book readers with its sleek, portable screen.
