I think this article raises a very important point about the importance of political spouses having careers of their own. However, I think the author is a little harsh on the current generation of first ladies - they had a very different set of social norms to grapple with when they were in college.
Quoted: Wife again standing mutely at his side, Eliot Spitzer resigned from his office as governor of the state of New York. When Spitzer's wife, Silda, called Hillary Clinton for advice on how to be a good first lady a few years ago, she probably didn't realize how horribly relevant the connection would be. What could she have done? What can any woman do? How about this: Don't quit your day job.

This is so messed up I don't even know where to start...
Quoted: Sarah Palin's picture on the cover of Newsweek sparks controversy. Republicans find the photo untouched. In a Fox News video below a Republican said that the Newsweek photo emphasizes Sarah Palin's wrinkles, blemishes, pores and facial hair, while Newsweek make Barack Obama's photo to look "presidential" while they deliberately made Sarah Palin look like "one of the folks".

This article really hits the nail on the head! (Also, that's a great illustration). Apparently the writer authored a novel called "The Abstinence Teacher" - seems worth checking out.
Quoted: Caribou hunting aside, Sarah Palin represents the state-of-the-art version of a particular type of woman—let's call her the Sexy Puritan—that's become a familiar and potent figure in the culture war in recent years.

Dang, never underestimate Barbara Walters...
Quoted: John McCain bounded onto the set of “The View” this morning, perhaps expecting a fun session chatting with the ladies about the softer side of his presidential campaign. But once he settled onto the couch, he got a pretty good grilling — on earmarks, on his erstwhile image as a “maverick” and, of course, about his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin.

I didn't realize this conflation of family values with an anti-choice stance goes back to Reagan. I also didn't know how many Republicans, including Barbara Bush, favor leaving Roe V. Wade alone (assuming they're not Cindy McCain and know it what it is) as per the GOP philosophy of less government in people's personal lives...
Quoted: In the 1980s, the rising conservative movement tried to frame the pro-life cause as part of a broader family-values agenda that included reducing rates of illegitimate childbirth, welfare dependency, and divorce.

If this is for real, how is not getting more attention?!
Quoted: On Wednesday night, Katie Couric interviewed Cindy McCain, and it turns out Cindy McCain does not know what Roe V. Wade is! No really, check the transcript...

Another home run from Samantha Bee! Thanks for this one too, Pam.
Quoted: Last night on The Daily Show, Samantha Bee knocked it out of the park when she did a segment interviewing conventioneers about Sarah Palin. (One woman likes her because "she makes Americans feel like anyone can be president.")

Last night, I was wondering how Heart felt about their song "Barracuda" being co-opted to promote Sarah Palin at the GOP convention. Turns out they're none too pleased - Sony even issued a cease-and-desist. Go Heart! Thanks for finding this, Pammy.
Quoted: UPDATE Friday morning: here's a statement by Ann and Nancy Wilson from EW.com: "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image."

My latest blog entry...
Quoted: When I moved to Seattle, I was surprised to learn that the Governor (Christine Gregoire) and both senators (Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray) are women. The fact that it's NOT big news across the country shows that actually, Washington State is responsible for some of those major cracks we keep hearing about in the media.

This article is a reference to Michelle Obama's shout-out to Hillary in her electrifying speech at the DNC tonight. I think it raises really good points while still giving Hillary some well-deserved credit.
Quoted: What the Clinton campaign must do to have lasting significance.

Wow, it's amazing how much thought Michelle Obama had to put into every detail of this appearance on The View.
Quoted: Obama had approached the appearance, to quote Barbara Walters' on-air reading of the morning's New York Times, "with an eye toward softening her reputation." To this end, she did not do her hair in the Jackie Kennedy flip that André Leon Talley—the Vogue editor who Page Six alleges to be her style guru—pegs as central to her "image strategy."
