Is it more energy-efficient to buy a used car than a brand-new hybrid? - Slate Magazine

Love this column from Slate. It's settled - a hybrid is still more energy efficient!

Quoted: I'm shopping for a car, and my tree-hugging pals are pushing me to get a Prius. But it seems wasteful to buy a brand-new car, given all the energy that goes into the production process. Wouldn't it be greener to get a certified, pre-owned vehicle with decent gas mileage?

U.S.: Caribbean monk seal is extinct - MSNBC.com

    Aw, this is so sad!

MSN City Guides - Haute Cuisine, Head to Tail

Interesting MSN City Guides article about a growing trend in restaurants using all parts of animals in preparing their menus. It's not only healthy, but environmentally friendly too! Also, that's a mighty fine headline if I may say so :)

Quoted: Some high-end eateries are going whole hog (cow, lamb, chicken—you name it) by using every part of an animal.

Gore bets $300 million on climate pitch - MSNBC.com

I heard about this on 60 Minutes. Gore gave a great interview - he seems really excited and at peace with his life trajectory. And why shouldn't he be?

Quoted: Nobel prize winner and former Vice President Al Gore plans to launch a three-year advocacy campaign calling for the United States to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

Are cloth diapers that much greener than disposables? - Slate Magazine

Slate column detailing the pros & cons of cloth vs. disposable diapers. Cloth wins out, but it's not as clear-cut a victory as you might think. The author also raises interesting points about the general wastefulness of baby care products.

Quoted: I'm about to have my first child, and my husband and I are vigorously debating our diaper options. Old-fashioned cloth nappies seem like a greener choice than plasticky disposables, but I've heard this isn't necessarily the case—washing machines don't run on pixie dust, after all.

The eco-guide to responsible drinking. - Slate Magazine

Great headline (and sub-hed too). Anyway, in case you were wondering...

Quoted: I've been gearing up for next week's St. Patrick's Day drink-a-thon. If I'm intent on being an environmentally correct lush, should I plan on quaffing my suds from bottles or cans?

Photo Gallery: Connect the Dots: Where Did Those Roses Come From?

Interesting MSN slide show on the flower trade and the path that flowers (specifically roses) travel in making it to your local florist. Really glad they're raising awareness about this.

Quoted: Today some 78 percent of the 4 billion cut flower stems purchased in the U.S. -- including the roses bought on Valentine’s Day -- come from Colombia and Ecuador, where they are grown in large production greenhouses, then harvested, sorted and shipped out around the world.

Is methane really worse for the environment than carbon dioxide? - Slate Magazine

Love this environmental column from Slate. Basically, methane deserves much more attention than it's getting as a greenhouse gas, but the sheer volume of CO2 emissions makes it the most serious culprit...

Quoted: You're always going on and on about carbon dioxide emissions and their role in cooking the planet. But CO 2 isn't the only greenhouse gas worth worrying about, right? I've heard methane is a lot more toxic to the environment.
