Lakshmi and Me | 2008 Seattle International Film Festival | India

Checking this documentary out at SIFF tomorrow. I hear it's one of India's stronger entries, curious to see it...

Quoted: “What sin did I commit to be born a woman?” These chilling words of 21-year-old housemaid Lakshmi reverberate throughout Mumbai-based filmmaker Nishtha Jain’s extraordinary documentary. Jain turns the camera on her part-time maid, and in the process illuminates the complex relationship between employer and servant, filmmaker, and subject.

Out of Time (Aus der Zeit) | 2007 Seattle International Film Festival | Austria

Checking this documentary out tomorrow. It seems like such a universal, bittersweet story about "progress"... hopefully it'll live up to this great SIFF review!

Quoted: Ostensibly a look at four old-world Austrian businesses that won’t survive gentrification, this rewarding documentary is really about the quiet moments and the banter that takes place among the aging proprietors. Beautifully shot and absolutely charming, it recalls of a time when community was more important than consumerism.

Broken English | 2007 Seattle International Film Festival | USA

Looking forward to checking this out at SIFF - I love Parker Posey!

Quoted: Parker Posey and Melvil Poupaud form a cross-Atlantic indie film dream team in Zoe Cassavetes’ sparkling romantic comedy for latent depressives and the chronically lovelorn. It’s Sex and the City with a dose of Xanax and a hit of ’30s screwball charm, costarring Cassavetes’ magnificent mom, Gena Rowlands.

Vanaja | 2007 Seattle International Film Festival | Rajnesh Domalpalli | India

This is one of the Indian films at SIFF this year. Thinking about checking it out on Saturday...
